Made me think of the Nieuwegracht canal in my town. It's from 1390 and its name distinguishes it from the Oudegracht from 1190.
And then there's the city Nijmegen. Its name means 'new market' and is pre roman; before 100 AD.
Heh, also the New Castle is in the city of Naples, which is a contraction of Neopolis, meaning New Town, which it was called when it was founded around the sixth century BC...
