Friday Question If you became a farmer, what would you farm/raise?
Cheese. I would grow cheese.

Tomatoes.

My uncle had an 'egg ranch' (2 large barns full of closely penned hens - factory farming in the 1960s and the worst smelling environment I ever voluntarily entered), so in spite of my own carnivorosity, I'd do something definitely vegetable. I'm in a serious agricultural area, and just across Highway 101 from a field of broccoli. Yep, I could manage broccoli just fine, and not only wear this tshirt design proudly,

but get the creator to put it back into production to promote MY Macho Broccoli...

alpacas and pygmy goats. they're so freakin' cute.

I love that broccoli t-shirt!

I would raise alpacas (although the wool can be kind of itchy). Silkworms might be interesting if it wasn't kind of gross.

Grapes to make the wine.

Would this hypothetical farm be in Colorado?

Goats. I read this amazing book, Goat Song, and was sold. I'd also grow Christmas trees.

Goats. And if we're assuming that I have actual farming/gardening ability, then also grapes and roses.

Christmas trees. Planting trees is fun.

Oh, here in Colorado; the hypothetical question answer has to be marijuana.
Reality of the 'if' would have to be grapes; wine and stuff to do the outdoorsy thing with.

I think I'd be to faint of heart to raise livestock.
So I think I'd tend to an estate of bosbouw; growing trees.
Incredibly boring but in theory I like the atmosphere.

I would sow compassion and reap peace.

I would want to raise Kashmir goats and then milk them and make cashmere goat cheese that I would sell with cashmere scarves and hats and stuff.
Also I would have an acre devoted to all different kinds of chili peppers and I would make hot sauce.
For personal use I would have a pear orchard and blackberry and raspberry bushes.

Apple orchards.

High quality organic meat -- sheep, pigs, chickens, maybe ostrich.

And weed, for sure, if it was legal.

Hell.

For me, vegetables, herbs, and fruit . . . . and lots of space for a couple of border collies to roam.
posted by bearwife 07 January | 12:59
Oh wow, I love this farm. These are all next to each other right?

I'd want small ponies. I thought for a while I'd want a horse farm, but I don't want to care for anything taller than me. So goats, turkeys (smart ones) maybe chickens. I've got no use for geese or ducks, and rabbits are a PITA.
posted by lysdexic 07 January | 15:34
I don't know if I want Eideteker's farm next to everyone else's . . . but maybe good (asbestos) fences will make good neighbors.
