Man, I think this is mentioned in Within A Budding Grove. At one point, the narrator says he and another person are looking at a pair of Singhalese. I'd thought this was an animal, maybe a bird native to Sri Lanka, but nope! Turns out they were gawking at captive Sri Lankans! Horrifying all round.
