I don't think they've found unusual cannibalism when there wasn't a food shortage and excessively needy offspring are not clearly a detriment, but it reads like crap.
Trying to think of a human parallel, there's no good ones. It all ends in homogeneity and fear, so i think i know where these human parallels reside.
