Are chiropractors allowed to call themselves doctors now? At least in the US? Did something change i don't know about?
They can if they have a degree from a school approved by the Council Chiropractic Education, a regular MD , or PhD.

My 8th grade science teacher took us on a field trip to the then LA chiropractic college

Maybe i've been too surrounded by medical doctors most of my life, but they always seemed firmly of the mind that that was a big no. Was there a big spate of chiropractors pretending to be MDs or is this just fall out from the high rates of quackery?

D.C. is Dr.of chiropractic.

And yet I've always thought they were suppose to stick to D.C. as I've never seen a chiropractor substitute it with Dr. on their own materials.

Could just be the vehemence of opinion of old school MDs I assumed was an actual thing, but I thought there was an actual prohibition against claiming the title because it could be misconstrued as medical.

I'm with you, eth; I think it's weird.

Dr. Laura doesn't have any sort of psychology degree.

I think it's misleading, but I don't think it's illegal. I actually have similar issues with nurses with doctorates calling themselves "Dr," not because they don't deserve the title but because in medical settings, "Doctor" generally implies MD or DO.

On the field trip the students at the college were examining cadavers.

I've heard them referred to as doctors by themselves and others. Some chiropractors do pretty good work with back and spinal issues, but I saw one (once only) who claimed to treat other diseases, including infectious diseases. That's quackery in my book.
