Shoes How many have you got?
Near my front door, I usually have 7 pairs of shoes if I'm at home. I've got my festival flip flops and sneakers, my running shoes, 2 pairs of other flipflops, my work shoes, and a pair of rain boots in the coat closet.

In my bedroom closet I'm not sure how many pairs of shoes I have there, but they're not worn often, heh.

I just bought two new pairs of shoes: ≡ Click to see image ≡

In my defence I have to say that all my shoes were bought during sales. And over a long time span.

Two pairs of docksiders, one pair white gym sneakers, one pair green converse slip ons, one pair black oxfords, one pair black boots, one pair hiking boot, one pair light brown Chukka, one pair dark brown broque, one pair classic red converse sneaker.

I plead the 5th. Also, they are opening a frigging Converse store here. I am doomed. They have already filled the 2 closets and are piling up on the floor.

I have too many, some of which I only ever need for particular occasions or to go with a certain outfit. But because I've got very short, very broad feet, once I've bought a pair of shoes, even though I might only wear them a few times, I keep them. So I have a number of 'posh' shoes that I rarely wear, which are in boxes.

My day-to-date shoes are always flat and black. I tend to buy good quality shoes (I like Rohde, a German brand) and wear them until they fall apart. Usually the insides wear out before the outsides.

Occasionally I'll see a pair of shoes that are such a bargain I can't not buy them. For example, I once bought a pair of waterproof hiking boots for £5. I rarely go hiking, but I live by a forest and it can get pretty muddy round here so even though I've only probably worn them no more than 10 times, they've been worth having and keeping hold of.

Oh god. Are we counting hiking boots and sports shoes as well?

Ok, here's my tally:
1 pair of Magnanni
2 pair of Henderson
1 pair of Crockett&Jones (wholecloth!)
1 pair of Crockett&Jones boots
3 pair of Santoni boots
1 pair of Santoni leather sneakers
3 pair of sneakers
2 pair of generic black oxfords
1 pair of black monk shoes
1 pair of patent leather monk shoes
1 pair of K-Shoes boots
1 pair of ox blood shoes

2 pair of winter boots
1 pair of hiking boots
1 pair of running shoes
1 pair of biking shoes

Great scott. I'm a freak.

Guesstimating: 12 pairs in the shoe-holder thingy on my closet door, 1 pair of hiking boots, 2 pairs by the door, and probably another 5 pairs in my closet. So about 20? That includes all special-occasion shoes. I tend to think I have many fewer pairs of shoes than most women.

The new shoes are spiffy, jouke!

So many. It is a project to plan which ones to wear for the week and make them accessible.
posted by bearwife 14 July | 16:09
Do you like them occhi?
I'm still getting used to the blue suede ones to be honest.

Blue suede shoes. (somebody had to)
posted by JanetLand 14 July | 16:53
Yes, I do like them!

I think the blue shoes would look nice with a gray pants, maybe?

D'aw!

I was wondering if people would compare me to Carl Perkins. But I guess it's such an old song that my colleagues won't know it.
Only scholars such as JL would know about that.

Grey trousers. Good idea.
I'll see how they go with my grey prince de galle pair.

One pair work boots - Wolverine, steel-toed
One pair of Chucks - black on black one-stars
Three pairs of Onitsuka Tigers - Two for everyday wear, one horribly beat up pair I wear when I'm working at the clinic because I don't care if they get nasty.
One pair of dress shoes that I wear maybe once or twice a year
One pair of running shoes - horribly neglected.

But I'm not exactly fashionable, to say the least.

Considering we had a very nice, and talented, Elvis impersonator (from Massapequa) sing at our wedding in Vegas and walk me down the aisle, you can imagine I'm a fan of blue suede shoes (nifty shoes, jouke).

Sadly, I mainly wear the same black sneakers that also pass as work shoes every day (I already bought a new pair of the same style for the fall a couple months ago when they were on sale). With feet flat as a duck, and prone to night cramps, choices are limited. I love Easy Spirit, and I did recently buy a cute pair of pink flowered slip-on sneakers that are quite comfy. Footsmart, an online company, is my go-to place for wide widths for my duck feet. I also found some cute sandals there last summer. Along with my winter shoes and boots, I guess I have a total of six or seven pairs of footwear, not counting slippers. I almost never wear shoes at home.

1 pair of dress shoes, 1 pair of red lowtop chucks, 1 pair of hunter rainboots. I tell myself to get more shoes...but I never do.

Three pairs of Mephistos (two p. identical black loafers, one p. brown and black All-Rounders).
One pair of black Johnston & Murphy lace-ups.
One pair of black Rockport lace-ups.
One pair of tan Neil M. lace-ups.
One pair of Brooks Beast running shoes.

The Mephistos are the most comfortable, durable, low-maintenance shoes I've ever owned. I don't like to wear the Johnston & Murphy or Neil M. shoes, as they are heavy and uncomfortable. I use aftermarket insoles (work boot-type) in them to mitigate the discomfort. The Rockports are like walking on air, good for job interviews. The Brooks are pitched at so-called Clydesdales like myself, so they can take a pounding.

I also own a pair of winterized Asolo hiking boots, a pair of safety-toed Doc Martens work shoes and a pair of comfy shearling-lined house slippers.

Mmmmm shoes. Kind of a weakness and indulgence of mine. I've never had a professional manicure or pedicure and haven't been in a hair salon in 20+ years (I cut and color my own hair and it's pretty fantastic) but shoes are the one thing I buy for myself. I always buy on sale though, I don't think I've ever paid full price. I don't spend for designer shoes and love buying knock offs.

-dark shadow (fancy way of saying gray) puma trainers that I'm obsessed with
-jeep j40 hiking shoes that are way too cute
-bootie minnetonkas
-knee high suede boot minnetonkas
-snow boots that make my legs look like the michelin man
-llbean rain boots
-black stiletto pumps
-nude stiletto pumps
-leopard print loafers
-brown leather knee high lace up boots
-brown leather dingos
-brown leather frye boots
-beige leather buckled booties
-black high heeled espadrilles
-white linen high heeled espadrilles that tie around the ankle
-natural leather high heeled wedges with cork heels
-4 pairs of sandals
-2 pairs of flip flops
-5 pairs of various print flats
-2 pairs of gladiator sandals
-2 pairs of ballet (lace around the ankle) flats
-boat shoes

That's 32 but there are at least 10 more pairs that I can't remember right now. I'm not Carrie Bradshaw or Imelda Marcos level but I do have too many pairs of shoes.

Also, I pre-own these. As in, they aren't for sale anywhere yet that I know of but when I find them they're mine. When they go on sale, that is.

Mephistos! I used to wear those as a teenager. Something about those being the only ones available in size 11 where I grew up.
posted by jouke 14 July | 23:36
They have a wide toebox and a relatively narrow heel, perfect for a foot like mine. I've worn Eccos that fit similarly in the front but not quite as well in the heel.

It's funny how we all have shoe types and brands that fit our very idiosyncratic stylistic and orthopedic requirements.
I know Rohde as a brand from my mothers shoes. But I'd never heard of Chucks or Wolverine for example.
:-)

They tried to sell me some extremely expensive american shoes by the way. Made out of horse leather.
posted by jouke 15 July | 11:11
Does "cheap" count as a shoe brand? Because that's what all mine are, with the exception of my workout shoes (always get New Balance cross trainers, but I live near the factory outlet).
posted by JanetLand 15 July | 12:01
I bet I own as many shoes as the rest of the thread so far combined.
I definitely have more than 70 pr if boots are being counted.
What can I say, I walk a lot and I like shoes.
Shoes have very different occasions and purposes, especially in NYC. There are going out dancing shoes, going out and taking taxis shoes, walking in the day shoes, business shoes, casual shoes, rainy day shoes, shoes to wear with skirts v pants v shorts, boots of all different heights and rain/snow sensitivities, etc.

Oh my... I'm almost a clothes W..re to begin with (mfg anywhere but China if at all possible). Shoes.
Regulars: Moccassins/boat shoes - bought while Monkey Wards was going under and unboxed last year. I am so glad tassles are back in, ha. Brazil.
Running: Air Max 360s; my knees are shot and I have to / cannot run in less than a premium shoe, same model for 15+ years now. China.
Casual dress: Low quarter Renegade II GTXs Lowas, Germany.
Cooler weather: Mid quarter Baleno GTX Lowas, Germany.
Beaters: New Balance 606s, from 2004; I do not know how these shoes have not disintegrated by now; especially after being worn as work shoes for 1,000s of days.
Winter boot? I've got a pair of North Face Baltero 400s; they really are not too warm and I think they are supposed to be a style inter boot. Since they aren't warm ( freeze my damn toes off usually ) they don't get worn much. China.
PT career/job: current desert tan/khaki suede w/steel toe. I like these because one has a smooth suede, and the other has a ?fuzzy? suede. A tale of two pigs, I like them because they match but have different finishes. ha.
Dress professional: Black leather low quarter Bates, issued in 1997, and sheathed with 100's of layers of Kiwi.
Winter work: Mid quarter Bate's Chukas, issued, now NLA, steel toe, and really weirdly a very comfortable boot. USA.
Cowboy: Old Red Wing bull hide boots from 1987 that just make me too too tall and I guess they are icons or totems at this point in time. USA.
Home softies: North Face NSE tent bootie III. I *am* a lush.

I rotate my shoes so they last as long as possible, I wax and oil the leather as needed, and use each shoe for its proper purpose.
Shoes. :)

Brown dress shoes of some sort
2 pair leather Topsiders

I think that is it, currently.

"You know," said the Finn, "I got a pair of shoes older than you are."

(From Gibson's Count Zero)

I actually say this to people at times. . .

It would be fun to make our shoes the theme of a Photo Friday. I would haul them all out and take pictures if we did that.

I guess I'm an old fogy when it comes to sneakers. Here's an overview of the history of sneakers
As a child I did sports (phys. ed. and track athletics) wearing the adidas shoes from (row 1, column 3) and (row 2, column 2). So apparently that 1950s model was still being sold as a childrens gymnastiekschoen in the mid 1970s in NL.
So why am I calling myself an old fogy when it comes to sneakers? Because I see them as sports shoes. And when I shop for running shoes I ask the sales man for something less garish. A request to which he obviously responds with incomprehension.
Reminds me of how my parents see denim trousers as work man clothing that you might wear when working in the garden.
I have to say that I'm tempted to take a similar position when it comes to denim trousers. But only out of a tendency to be a bit archaïc-contrarian when it comes to dressing.
