Did you eat anything fabulous this weekend? [More:]I did! A few things, in fact:
*Incredible crab cakes benedict for brunch on Saturday. Eggs perfectly poached, tons of hollandaise sauce that was perfectly salted, nice potatoes on the side. Mmmmmmmmm.
*The first watermelon of the season! Juicy and delish. Had it at a BBQ, along with a grilled hot dog, hummus, guacamole, Cool Ranch Doritos....so yummers.
*Slow cooker pot roast. My roast is always a little on the dry side, so for the first time I made a brown sauce to go with it and it was SO YUMMERS. Butter makes everything better.
*Coulommiers cheese from Trader Joe's. It's like brie, buttery and creamy. I ate it while watching Miss USA last night.
Holy moley yes. My mom and daughter wanted to take me out for lunch, and I chose Jaleo, a Jose Andres place I'd been before. I was a little nervous that my daughter wouldn't find anything she liked, but, hey, it was my day. But she LOVED it, and felt sophisticated and adult and fancy. Chicken fritters, three hams, including the legendary iberico de bellota, fried paella, anchovies on toast, goat cheese with fig jam, squid, chocolate flan with brioche ice cream, bread with a supremely simple and wonderful fresh tomato spread, all just really fantastic and great service and happiness all around.

I made a very good grilled cheese sandwich with provolone, tomatoes, and pesto. I got the grilling part just right, which is rare for me.

Thanks so much for the delicious cookout food, TPS! I owe you for the glass I broke, though. My honor demands satisfaction!

Ooh, now I want tapas.

I made cauliflower gratin last night, with mascarpone, gruyere, and a bit of nutmeg and cayenne, and it was lovely.

Oh, yes. We went out for sushi for my birthday dinner and they had a couple of special rolls invented by the restaurant for the summer. Both were simply fabulous. One was wrapped in soy skin instead of seaweed -- very different, almost thin pasta like texture. The chef's choice of sushi was pretty awesome too.

Creamed spinach! I made a huge helping of creamed spinach yesterday, and I have eaten so much my stomach hurts. Can't stop the nomming.

I made slow-cooked lamb with Middle Eastern spices, which I ate with couscous and roast vegetables. It was soooo good.

The rolls were the 101 and 106.

And we went to an arts festival where I got the world's best homemade ice cream -- chocolate almond in one of those decadent huge cones.

Aw, I remember going to Jaleo on possibly my first visit to DC, before tapas was huge and going by it all the time. The sign is burned in my brain. I miss DC.

Yesterday seemed to be about eating all day, and mostly a festival of meats. There was some kind of ribfest so I got my dad ribs when I couldn't find the planned clams, as a friend had mentioned getting her dad ribs, because he's a cheffy type who always wants to improve his own. I just made me crave the South, where every chicken shack and rib hut that throws up on a block is crazy good, while the "award winning" ribs up here are just... not.

Onion rings! The world's best....Vidalia onions, light flaky batter and zippy sauce. Mmmmmmmmmmmsooooogooood.

Friday night I splurged and steamed fresh broccoli the topped it with homemade cheese sauce. Double yum.

I made a big pot of leek and potato soup that I added sauteed chicken to. I brought some for lunch today and added some leftover steamed asparagus to it. Nom.

Dubliner cheese. It has cheddar's sharpness, swiss's depth, and parmesan's nuttiness and texture, all in one cheese. Slice it super thin so it literally melts on your tongue. Pricey, but not outrageously so.

Hey, I thought you were suppose to avoiding things like cheese. If you're freely eating of cheeses, I no longer question this morning's cheese eating behavior and general past butter abuse.

Moderation, not avoidance. Also, my diet is 80% raw fruit and veggies anyway.

As someone who ate cheese and garlic before a cholesterol test to watch them fight it out, I have no rights to say anything.

I am considering whether or not to eat half the readily available cheese in the joint.

Any input is appreciated, unless it is stupid and boring.

Dubliner cheese.

Lovely cheese. I really like its nutty flavour.

A friend and I rode our motorcycles (the long way, of course!) to Levering Orchard and picked several pounds of both sweet and sour cherries. I'm not really a cherry pie person so I'm trading the sour ones to a friend for a couple of heads of Romaine lettuce from his garden. I'm keeping the sweet ones, though. So delicious!

But but but sour cherry soup! Sour cherry soup!

Oh good, I'm not the only one.

Apricots are in season. I am in heaven.
