Writing prompts? Can you recommend any good resources for writing prompts? →[More:]
(Technically, I'd love some non-creative, non-"school essay" prompts, but I'll take what I can get. My brain is mired in jargon and deadlines are looming.)
I can see why you're having trouble. I'm afraid the last thing I'd want to write about is an "office appliance." Still, if you must, you must. I assume this is something for work? If you could be more specific about the task(s) at hand -- what it is you need to write before the deadline(s) -- I might be able to be more helpful.
One technique I've found helpful with almost any topic is brainstorming, also called webbing or mapping. Basically, just write your topic in the center of a sheet of paper, circle it, and branching out from the center, write whatever associations come to mind. Go fast; include whatever comes to mind; fill the page; let branch lead on to branch and so forth. I'm sure you probably did this in school, but businesses use it, too, to generate new ideas. Often your brain will start with the obvious and get more and more unusual as you go. You can brainstorm with a partner or group as well, of course, bounce ideas off each other. It's amazing the ideas my students will come up with sometimes.
If you were talking creative writing, I'd recommend Natalie Goldberg's second book on writing, Wild Mind. I consider it my bible, the book that really taught me how to write. But that's more for creative writing.
