Whale bone porn. Won't someone think of the children?
I told you we should've nuked the whales.

Oh sure! Jump on the bandwagon now that the damage is done!

Oh there is a ton of this stuff. Mystic Seaport has some, the Nantucket Whaling Museum, New Bedford. Usually it's not on view because of stuff exactly like this. This kind of scrubbing-up of history is one reason everyone thinks people in the past were so different from us. Drives me crazy.

If and when I am ever in Vancouver again, I am going to that museum. Looks fascinating.

The museum has “more graphic” examples of scrimshaw, she says, but these remain hidden downstairs in the museum’s basement. They include depictions of creative candlestick use and what Ms. Owen cautiously describes as “the act.” They will likely never see the light of day.

BUT, without them the whole story isn't being told? ....IMO

I agree with Miko about sanitizing history. I once saw a largish display, at an antique mall type store, in Keene, NH. The display was a multilevel glass case featuring "marital aids" made of all kinds of bone and some wood, from all over the world.

It was a fascinating thing to see. Particularly because they where so old and some, clearly, where too expensive at the time to NOT be owned by very wealthy woman.

I wish it was a museum display, there would have been more info. But alas, the next day, all of it was gone. Swept under history's rug. Very sad.

I heard people have been having sex for nearly as long as there have been people on this planet!

Yeah but they didn't enjoy it.

What this museum needs to do now is put on a special over 18 Scrimshaw exhibition at night with all the pieces they have and reap the benefits of this silly complaint.

Speaking of holes in learning (ooh, dirty!), I heard about a sex ed news bit where the kids were all having sex but did not know it was suppose to be enjoyable.
