These photos have made my week. They're absolutely wonderful. What a brilliant place for the cats to live.

About 30 years ago I picked up a book in the Shoe Lane library in London that was about a cat sanctuary island in Japan. It wasn't Cat Heaven Island, because it had barely any buildings on it, and no fishermen. It was run by, I think, an American couple (I might have been wrong about this) and they knew all their cats by name and loved them all.

There were lots of photos in the book - I particularly remember a photo of one cat who'd died when he was only six months old, and how much they said he'd left an impression on all their lives.

There were also a couple of horses, and the cats would patiently line up every day for their rides. There were some great pictures of four or five cats sitting on a horse as it toured round the island with them.

The book was written in the 1960s, and all the pictures were black & white. I really wish I'd written down the name of that book so I could try to find it again. I think about it from time to time and wish I had it.

Well, Senyar, sounds like a task for AskMe! Seriously though, that book sounds wonderful. I'd love to read it too.

i love me some kitties but looking through those pics i had to wonder where all the kitty poop goes and if they cats all have fleas from just wandering about everywhere.

otherwise YAY KITTEHS CAN HAZ ISLAND.

I imagine that by now the islanders have built a number of large sandboxes.
