Happy Halloween!→[More:]I post this every year, but it's my favourite creepy site.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot... I used to love Halloween, still do, I guess, but it's not like when you're a kid. I used to love dressing up and going trick-or-treating. Then my friend Stacey and I would sit at her kitchen table and lay out all our loot, and try to keep her father from stealing all our peanut butter cups. She lives out in San Diego now, married with a little girl, and her father, who was like a more benevolent second father to me, passed away a couple years ago. When I was older, I used to like handing out candy with my mom. She'd arrange all the candy -- five or six kinds -- in rows on a tray and replenish as we went. There were always lots of leftovers for the grown-up goblins.
Being on the third floor, we can't really hand out candy here. Also, I guess to keep things safe, the kids just trick-or-treat at the local businesses, rather than residences. Things have changed. Down our street, though, someone's really into Halloween -- I went to get in my car last week and was startled by a mummified "body" hanging from a tree in their front yard. Their whole small yard had been turned into a "cemetery," too. Creepy.
Happy, happy Halloween, all! My husband will man the door tonight as I have to teach a class, but we suspect few little kids will visit on a cold and rainy night. I've been enjoying the house decorations around here this year, which are particularly creepy and awesome. And, weirdly, enjoying the fact that for the first time in my life, I don't actually want any candy. (Eat to Live! It's changing my lifetime taste buds!)
Most of the communities around here (NE Ohio) have moved trick or treating to Sunday night because of Sandy. We didn't get the wallop that the east coast did but there's a moderate amount of damage here; lots of trees down, power out, flooding.
So anyway, no trick or treating tonight. So maybe all the candy will be on sale tomorrow? I've been craving Bit O Honeys which is not really classic Halloween candy.
My little Spiderman will do his candy collecting in my brother's neighborhood as the houses in ours are all quite far apart.
Thing is, I'm sort of done with Halloween and by Sunday I'll really be done with it. I hope he gets some Bit O Honeys in his loot.
My new neighborhood will have trick or treaters! We have several bags of candy and decorations up for the first time in years. That being said, the wife wants to give out the treats. She really missed it living in NYC. I'll have a cocktail or two and make spooky noises in the background.
I eventually decided to help with the trick or treaters. So I put on a shady Borsalino hat, an old shirt and got out my skull topped cane. I would answer the door with a growl. "What do you want!" The kids loved it. Then I guessed their costumes. They were so sweet. I had a great time! I guess I'm not so much of an asshole after all. My first fun Halloween in 20 years. Seriously.
the first place i lived had a sign up list for those willing to have trick or treaters. I did it the first year, the second year I wanted to see the parade IRL and the third year I was in Germany.
There aren't that many kids where I am now and the neighbor who attacked his nanny put in the system where one can only get to one's own floor unless prior arrangements have been made.
We closed up shop at 9pm (half an hour earlier than last year). Not very many tricksters this year, perhaps 20. It was probably the rain. Although it's fairly light this evening we're under a heavy rainfall warning.
