I have seen the name Gotye, but before this post, I didn't know that it was a singer's name. I couldn't understand most of the lyrics, and I only got through two minutes. Crap like that is why I stopped listening to radio in the 70s.
I actually like this song—except when Gotye is singing.
If I hear a song twice I'll rewrite the lyrics to be about poop, so this song is already "You didn't have to poop me out!" as sung by a poop. So I'm immune to this re-imagining.
I've heard it on the radio sometimes. Though not as much as Adele or Adele-alikes or "oh Jesus fuck am I hearing a Nickelback song is this Nickelback if so everyone is right change the station quick."
Or a country song today where "barefoot bluejeans" was the refrain and it was doing that country music trope so hard that is like: remember when we were young and dumb and hot and it's assumed we fucked all the time before our lives turned to shit? Yeah. That was a special time.
What?!? You guys never read and clicked on the links of my post where I introduced MetaFilter to Gotye (focusing on a very different song of his), almost eight months ago? The "State of the Art" video gave me a different view of The Artist Otherwise Known As Wally DeBecker, and helped me to tolerate the overexposure of "Somebody" since none of his BEST stuff would likely go anywhere in today's pop music market. I had the same experience over 30 years ago as a fan of a guy who wrote and sang a bunch of unique stuff before he sold out and gave us "The Pina Colada Song". Rupert Holmes went on from his 'One Hit Wonderment' to write Broadway Musicals and mystery novels, all of which are better than that song. I hope Gotye does as well.
I've never heard this and am another who never hears music that everyone else is sick of hearing all the time. Perhaps also because I never listen to the radio. For me, it was that stupid crazy frog song that suddenly started spewing out everywhere. I turned the radio off and haven't turned it back on since. Well, except for an occasional listen to Gold FM's classic rock party mix (ie no ads) on a saturday night.
I think this is the second or maybe the third time I've heard the song - and I like it. I guess I've been lucky and not heard it often enough to get sick of it. I've heard Call Me Maybe about as often and it's a cute pop song. I don't listen to the radio very often, but I turn on Galaxie (on tv) once in a while and that's probably where I heard them.
PS: I had no idea who sang either song until I looked them up today.
