28 July 2012

I'm not really interested in the Olympics. But my wife is. [More:]She watched all the countries march in at the opening ceremonies. Cheered for the Dutch (for me) and the Puerto Ricans (for her). This morning I woke up to a treat. The men's road race was on, and I saw the last 15 miles or so. I was rooting for the old guy, and he totally made the Columbian kid look like a rookie. 38 years old and a gold medalist. What a way to retire! So OK, I'm not totally disinterested in the Olympics, but I still find it odd to devote one's life to jumping over a bar, or flinging an iron ball around...
We've been watching all day. We're home anyway with the baby, might as well enjoy it all! I have a feeling we will have totally overdosed on Olympics by the time it's all over. Loved watching the road race through the packed streets of London- it made me nervous seeing how close the spectators were! I loved the winner's sassy pink/red bike. We'll be watching the prime time tape-delayed stuff tonight, too, even though we already saw the results on the NYTimes.

Ugh, I am so bummed at the cycling results. Vinokurov, the winner is (was, technically) a known doper and I am NOT a fan. It was really annoying how un-organized the peloton was. They're not used to racing without team radios, and it showed. It would have been so amazing for Mark Cavendish of Great Britain to have won.

Overall though, I thought I was all "yawn, Olympics" but turns out I do like watching them. I just forgot.

Played 2 hours of sand volleyball early this morning (it was nice and cloudy and cool and perfect) then, this afternoon, watched both indoor and outdoor VB on the Olympics, just to remind myself how the game SHOULD be played.

But a very fun day.

I always maintain that there are very few people who cannot find *some* aspect of sports to enjoy. For instance, I can't stand NASCAR, really can't stand it, but if I'm with my sister and her family and they're really getting into it and having fun, then it starts to look more interesting. At least for that day.

I'm loving it. The women's cycling road race today was much better than the men's, though the rain was a bit scary. Currently enjoying synchronised diving. No idea how they do that. I could easily spend the next week glued to the TV, though I'm away (and busy) for the main athletics events.

The BBC website has up to 24 simultaneous live streams (probably not available outside the UK) and it'll take superhuman willpower not to fire them up at work. I could quite happily hop between diving, canoeing, shooting, tae kwon do, archery, etc etc.

I think the appeal for me is watching people do anything to the highest possible standard. There's something quite intoxicating about that, for me.

The tennis is a nice Wimbledon bonus. There's a channel here playing nothing but. Very cool. It's raining now, so there's only the center court, with the roof closed, but still a treat. It's cool to see the players wearing colors at the All Englad Club, too (maybe they'll change their policy -- not likely). I like a lot of the other sports as well -- gymnastics, diving, swimming, beach volleyball. But of course tennis is my favorite.

I love watching equestrian and rowing/canoeing/kayaking. And sailing. This is mainly because they are events that New Zealand is reliably decent at. our rowing mens pair set a world record (breaking the previous by 6 seconds) in their first heat on saturday. that was quite exciting.
