Hunting ivory netsuke carvers: "nearly all Japanese people have figurines, anime or cartoon characters hanging from their mobile phones — for the most part without realizing they are in their mass-produced, contemporary way keeping alive the nation's netsuke tradition."
Hey neat. My sister has a small netsuke collection which is made up of stuff my father brought her back from Japan when he used to travel here. I will send her this article.

My fiancée's 11-year old nephew gave me this mass-produced contemporary netsuke to hang from my mobile phone. There is a little pink bell attached.

Thanks for this! Here are pictures from the 20th-34th annual exhibitions from the Japan Ivory Sculptors Association. Their website is in Japanese, and it seems that Google's auto-translation isn't too awkward.

Did anyone else read that as "angry nut sack cravers?"
