16 Tons as you've never really heard or seen it before. Whoa. Just, whoa. The 60s were weird.
Actually, if you close your eyes so you can't see the dancers, it doesn't sound half bad. In an "I'm in Vegas with James Bond and a delicious martini" kind of way.
The original Merle Travis version sounding a whole lot like Pete Seeger. Then again, when Pete Seeger did cover it with The Weavers he took it in another direction.
The 60's were an odd period where you saw a lot of this kind of thing...Older, more traditional "crooners" trying desperately to update their act because they were very quickly becoming musical relics. It could be quite embarrassing to watch.
Thorzdad, that sounds similar to a number of older musical acts who tour county fairs and casinos in the current time. Except instead of updating their acts, they're playing to the nostalgia, despite visuals aging quite a bit, if not also the audio performance.
Then again, nostalgia is a funny thing. I recently went to a party of yout's, and TLC's No Scrubs was played after a bunch of 80s songs. No Scrubs came out in 1999! But 13 years to a 21 year old is a long time.
