There goes any chance of a reunion: Monkees lead singer Davy Jones has died.
I remember watching the Monkees when I was a kid, 7 or 8 years old. My sister had a crush on Davy Jones, but I always preferred Peter Tork. Nobody liked Mike Nesmith.
If you DIDN'T see what Eid did, Davy Jones was the man who made David Bowie "David Bowie" (because "David Jones" was his real name but this Jones got to use it first).
I think I'm going to dig out my DVD of The Monkees' "Head" movie (which I bought from Amazon.com with some affiliate income from my blog 6 years ago - hmm... it was $9.47 then, now $14.99 and ships in 1-2 months - I wonder if they're jacking up the prices on Monkees CDs like they did with Whitney Houston... but I digress). "Head" was so weird and wonderful... co-written by a very young and very stoned Jack Nicholson... hard to remember too many specifics - Annette Funicello, 50-foot-tall Victor Mature, and Frank Zappa deadpan-seriously criticizing Davy's work. If there's a Rock & Roll Heaven, Davy's having a good laugh with Frank now.
Yeah, Head is pretty amazing. I have it on my Netflix queue. Time to run it to the top. I have the soundtrack CD and it has a few really great tunes. My first ever rock album was Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. And yes it was a real album. It was the first or second album that they made out from under the thumb of Don Kirschner. All them on instruments.
My mother bought it for me when I asked her for a Monkees album. She had good taste. Or good luck. :)
