Wanted: sane mom network Is there a site or something of sensible mothers?[More:] A new friend of mine has a one year old and just found out she is pregnant. We are surrounded by religious fanatics and gender role stereotypes, and she needs to hear from parents who aren't vaccine-phobic, scaremongering xenophobes who have lives as well as babies. There has got to be some existent forum or something out there already, right?
There are sooooooo many mommy blogs that I'm sure there's one in her flavor. I just don't know my way around them.

Me neither. It's a vast sea and she has no particular flavor. If I was looking for vegan or crunchy or Christian, I'd have a direction, but she's not homeschooling or needing validation, etc. She's not a hipster or a consumerist. She needs to know stuff moms know but her baby is not her entire life.

I don't know about forums, but in terms of blogs I (who do not have children) like, here's my list. Some are Mormon, some are atheist, some of the links are to RSS feeds -- do your best to make it work:

OH HAI HERE I AM.

Sensible forums for parents, boy, I don't know. You're running up against several obstacles. Forums in general will always bring at least a little drama. A forum devoted to a topic will by definition focus on that topic to the exclusion of others and seem obsessive at times, if not all the time. Pregnancy/parenting has a lot of hot button issues. I hang out on some forums on TheBump.com, namely the one for people due to give birth same month as me, and that's helpful as far as hearing that other women are dealing with similar issues I am, but it's not perfect. An anti-science woo-woo type sneaks in now and again (though the anti-vaccine stuff gets shut down pretty quick), and I sense a certain lack of...sophistication? among posters, the kind that suggests some might not have lives outside of baby (and the names, the NAMES they are thinking of for their children, ay yi yi). The consumerism is big, too. But overall, I find it helpful. I really haven't looked too much more for parenting forums, as others I've gotten glimpses of look craaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzy.

Reading blogs written by parents with a similar view, particularly if they have an active comments section, can be another good way to connect. I offer no suggestions. I read a blog for awhile and then it becomes too attention-whorey or too anti-science or too cutesy-twee and I unsubscribe.

trollswithwoodenspoons.com

The ladies there are wickedly smart and funny and supportive. Lots of feminist, atheist-friendly, woo-busting discussion, etc. They have a reputation (some of which is deserved and some of which isn't) as a snark-board, and it is true that the board was formed as a reaction to Mothering.com's OTT craxy-woo and oppressive moderation style, but it has grown beyond that designation.

If you find good links or info, post away. Maybe you'd like Maylin. I think you're about the same age and into some of the same music. Her dog is way bigger, though. Apparently, they both love underwear, so there's that.
