Guinness the cat update! For those keeping up w/ our newly 3-footed feline. [More:] We took Guinness to the vet this morning to have his stitches out! He was unhappy about the trip, but glad we got back to the house so fast. (He ran under the couch and was still there when I left for work, but A. is home with him all day.)

We'd been a little worried about him over the weekend... a couple of times he had these little freakouts where he'd start rolling over or hopping in a circle backwards, sometimes meowing. We were afraid it was some kind of pain happening. It happened at the vet, and she said he's just losing his balance (it happens after he's been lying down for a long time, or as it happens, been cooped up in the cat carrier) and that it's nothing to worry about. He'll get more practiced as he adjusts to life on 3 legs.

We'd also found what we thought was a scratch on his flank that he'd picked up on Friday, but that turns out to be what's left from a burn he sustained in the initial accident, and that neither we nor the vets saw before. It's already on the way to healing, so no worries there. Whew!

Overall the vet said he looked "really great" and that he doesn't need to come back until spring for his vaccinations. ALL of us will be happy not to have to make that trip for a while. :)
Wow! Nice update. It's amazing how quickly they recover with good supportive care. Thanks for the update. You is good people.

I didn't see the initial post. Glad the cat is doing well. What happened in the accident?

cjorgensen, Guinness was (until that day) an indoor/outdoor kitty, and he apparently got nailed by a car. One of his hind legs had to be amputated.

I meant to link to the original post, but forgot! Here it is. Also, the previous update, with pics.

How badly did his other leg get banged up?

Just scraped, Ardiril- it was bandaged up for the first week or so, but it's unwrapped now. And fur is finally starting to grow back, so hopefully in a few weeks he won't look like Frankenstein Cat anymore. :)

I remember when my friend's cat got run over by a car, Jeffery, a really cat about town. Apparently he got his pelvis crushed by a car and it took him three days to get home. They had to neuter him and do lots of surgery. When he got back, his one leg was shaved and looked like a chicken leg. He would stick it out and let it dangle, even after all the hair grew back.
Guinness seems pretty alert and aware, so his adjustment will be more active.
Honestly, I was more worried about how the household would be dealing with the other cats and the FIV, etc.
So lucky someone has gotten to be at home to monitor the situation.
Hope work doesn't suck too much.

He looks really great, all things considered. Yay for fast healing!

Whenever I reread what I've posted, I've left out a word or a letter smushed thoughts/sentences/words/grammar/things together because I'll type so fast.

I took pictures of all Bees' injuries and procedures. Part of me just wants to document things. Her shaved purple shiny stitches felt like they needed recording. I was so enraged by her tail injury I needed to express it.

So glad to hear everything is going so well for poor Guinness, BoPo. I hope the vet bills weren't TOO outrageous.
