happy Monday self-linky cat video [Youtube] [More:]

Here's a video mr. lfr shot of Marlowe solving a puzzle-box egg carton the mister made for him.

Posted for arsey in lieu of a hairball, as thanks for helping us name the little fuzzball! Big fuzzball now, actually (he's currently 15.6 lbs of solid muscle and still growing, ack!)

ew, my floor needs mopping but there's 10" of muddy snow in the yard right now and it's holiday-crazy-making-time and blah, housework :P

You could definitely try this with your own feline furballs; most cats enjoy puzzles, and this is a lot cheaper than those plastic "treat balls". Take any recyclable cardboard egg carton (wouldn't use plastic or styro ones on the chance they'd chew off & swallow bits), cut a couple of little holes or flaps in the top, drop a treat into each egg partition, close the box and watch the fun.

I am relatively certain some (most?) normal cats would just bypass the puzzle-solving aspect and chew right through the carton (hey, it's a solution!). This guy has proven to be amazingly smart in other regards, so we prefer to think he's simply being responsible about his toys (lulz).
Ooh, I'll have to do this for Anubis.

I'll have to try this too. When my neighbor's cat visits he wants undivided attention that I often can't give him.

full disclosure: the good news is that it keeps him busy and engaged for up to twenty minutes at a stretch, which is good considering how quickly he gets bored with his usual toys. He also rarely works all the treats out on the first (or second, or fourth) try, so it gives him random amusement throughout the day.

the bad news is that sometimes he suddenly "remembers" there are treats in the egg box at 2AM, so maybe keep that in mind if you have a small apt, or your cat is apt to drag his toys into the bedroom for PARTY CAT!!! midnight adventuretime. He's not a "retriever" (yet) so we toss it into the laundry room at night so it's far enough away the noise of him bashing it about doesn't wake us up.

This is great. I'll try this with new kitty (alas, she has yet to pick a name.)

lfr : We are currently in a temporary living situation with my cousin who has three large dogs, and while I prefer double-door security for indoor cats, this house has no-door security in that the back door has a dog door and my sleeping area has no door. Last Thursday at midnight, Sookie escaped out the dog door and when I tried to catch her, one of the dogs ran out and chased her over the back fence. That led to a cardiac event for me that was serious enough to put me in bed for the weekend, though not bad enough to go to the ER.

Anyway, since then, Sookie has stayed tighter to me than she ever has, so I guess she got the dickens scared out of her.

She does have a new orange pingpong ball that she loves to play with.

aw man Ardiril, that sucks, I'm sorry! Marlowe only escaped once before we fixed the fence so he couldn't get out. Same thing, he jumped the neighbor's fence, got in their back yard, got barked at by a big dog, and panicked. Fortunately he ran right back to the house, but it could have been bad.

is there any way to door/gate off any part of the house? Probably not or you'd have already tried it.

Marlowe is super picky about cat toys (although any box is fair game) but he absolutely loves those little green furry pompom things you can get for like a buck apiece at the pet store. We probably have three dozen lost under various items of furniture.

Hope you can get your living situation sorted out for both you and Sookie's sanity!
