The 75 Best Songs of 2011, according to Popmatters.com. I was happy to see folks like Washed Out, The Antlers, Girls, and M83 find a place on the list; also, I found over a half-dozen songs I'd never heard before and really liked.
I've probably never heard 100% of these songs, since I haven't listened to much new music lately. I was surprised to see so many familiar names on the list, though, some of which I didn't ever expect to see anymore, like Manic Street Preachers.
Also, how come there's no Belle Brigade on the list.
I've gone through first 20 songs so far and found quite a few that I liked (Washed Out; that Vaccines song; The Pains of Being Pure at Heart...). Turns out people are still making music that I like. Woo.
I don't think I've ever heard any of these. I only recognise about 10 of the artists and, yeah, some names there I wouldn't expect to see (Blondie has a new single out?). Yeah, I'm old, but I also never listen to the radio, so it's hardly surprising that I have no idea what music is coming out.
BP, yes but at some point in the past, I'd read a list like that and at least have a passing knowledge of the artists or the genres. Now, I don't even know the context that the music comes out of so I don't really have any way to know if it's good or not.
Most of the ones that I do know, like The Mountain Goats or Wilco are pretty backwards facing, working in older genres.
As usual, I've never heard 90% of them. I think that I counted 6 that I recognized. (I am so old).
Oh, me too! My planned Christmas present to myself: I'm going to buy an iPod* and fill it with current music**. That way, I get to give listen to the songs several times in several contexts before deciding what I love and what doesn't grab me.
*I know! It's a whole sliver of modern tech and modern life that I just never glommed onto. Surprising, because I was inseparable from my Walkman for a decade or more of my life. An iPod is what the Walkman dreamt of becoming.
**I will be asking for MeCha's help with the music selection. This post, of course, is going to be invaluable, as is the Personal Top 40.
