This video combines two of my favorite things: SLAYER, and MOAR SLAYER.
Seriously though: beyond the point-and-laugh funniness of it (which I'm OK with, because a video of headbangers moshing at a Slayer show with an overdubbed soundtrack of praise music would be equally knee-slapping), there's a real point here -- one of the reasons rock music traditionally has been condemned from the pulpit is that it encourages the kind of participatory ecstatic release that has always been relegated to authority-sanctioned sacred spaces. That the Pentecostal fire of the Holy Spirit can be so easily reproduced in a secular setting must have been deeply discomfiting to church leaders. Rock music, from Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry to Slayer and the Sex Pistols and beyond, really IS a means of transcendence and personal liberation, complete with its own set of individuated rituals and status markers. That's dangerous, if your daily bread gets buttered by strictly controlling others' human urges.
"Hail hail rock and roll, deliver me from the days of old."
