Our new sidebar art... and, a giveaway! In honor of Minecon, the event in Las Vegas where the game Minecraft finally gets its official, non-beta release this weekend, our new sidebar art consists of in-game screenshots taken by mygothlaundry, octothorpe, and yours truly. Also this weekend, we're going to hold a drawing and give some stuff away!→[More:] Saturday morning I'll be posting an official MetaChat Minecraft Giveaway Thread. Those interested should post their name in that thread to win either (A) a free copy of the game, or if you already own the game, (B) one of several cool Minecraft decals suitable for your computer, your car, your forehead, whatever.

The thread will remain open for at least 48 hours, and the drawing will be held on Tuesday of next week. One lucky person will get to join those of us already addicted to this crazy little game.

Sadly there are no bunnies in Minecraft. Cows, chickens, sheep, wolves and pigs but no bunnies.

Whoo! Acknowledge the addiction that makes my life worth living! Or, conceivably, is just an addiction. Whichever! Minecraft forever! Let me tell you, I am way happier building towns in Minecraft than I am in so called Real Life. If Real Life was a bit more like Minecraft I might check it out more often but honestly? Minecraft is better. Today I built an entire eternally flaming house in a desert. I hardly ever get to do that in North Carolina.

Also, BP, nice Nether screenshot with Nether fortress in the background! Have you - or anybody else, feel free to chime in on my horrific nerdiness - had any luck getting blaze rods from them? I have explored the entire Nether fortress I ended up in and no Blazes. One spawner full of skeletons, a lot of those bouncy subdividable square creatures but no Blazes, thus no Blaze Rods, thus no potions. I am kinda irked.

MGL, I have indeed gotten blaze rods by killing Blazes. The Blazes always form in fortresses... are you looking in those?

BTW, did you know you can take snow and pumpkins into the nether and build snowmen (called "Snow Golems") that can kill Blazes by pelting them with snowballs? I *SO* have to try this. Snowball fight in hell world! :D

Here's a pretty cool review of Minecraft (official release happens today!). I agree with just about everything this reviewer says about the game, except that I think the fighting monsters part is easily just as much fun as building things.
