How many different places have you lived? I count at least 21.[More:]

Two in Gainesville, FL.
Eugene, OR.
Two in Berkeley.
Boca Raton, FL.
Back for two more Gainesville, FL.
Upstate New York.
India.
Four places in Northampton, MA.
Five places in Portland, OR.
England.
Portland.

Seems like a lot for someone who's 37... You?
Nine in total. One in Australia, three in Derbyshire, three in east London and two in Essex. Next Sunday it'll be 15 years since I moved to this place.

Three, and I'd rather it weren't so many. I wish I could be back home, proper home.

I've lost count. At least 15 since I started making the decisions.

Four in Morristown, NJ
Two in Mont Alto, PA
Four in State College, PA
Six in Pittsburgh, PA

So, sixteen total. I move a lot but don't actually go that far.
posted by octothorpe 07 October | 16:33
It came to 19 altogether. 4 in California, 2 in New Jersey, 1 in North Carolina, 7 in Virginia, 1 in Maryland, and 4 in Maine.

posted by JanetLand 07 October | 16:33
Five different cities; 2 in City of Birth, 4 in University City, 1 in City in Other European Country, 5 in Huge City, 2 in current Medium-sized City. So 14 in all, not so many I suppose. I'm 33.

3. (Parents house, dorm at college, my current house).

Yes, I am that dull. And I hate moving with a fiery passion.
posted by sperose 07 October | 16:40
Quick count is more than 30 if you count each individual house or apartment, probably closer to 35 if I really think about it, but less if you just count towns. Here's my timeline from the last time we did something like this (cannot believe I actually found that, whoo, I must have mad magic metachat search skillz.)

Where in Eugene did you live, Specklet?

(I did this one previously but we'll pick up some new info here, I'm sure.)

I'm Not moving again. As far as I'm concerned, the next move will to a nursing home or under the dirt. Hopefully that won't be for thirty or forty years but I'm happy where I am and can't think of a reason that I'd want/need to move.
posted by octothorpe 07 October | 16:42
Been in my current place nearly 5 years now (longer than I've lived anywhere except my parents' place), and I love it and don't want to move, and luckily won't have to any time soon.
posted by altolinguistic 07 October | 16:42
15 for me.

17. In NY, VA, MT, WA, OR and VT.
posted by DarkForest 07 October | 16:45
Oh danf has madder search skillz than me! Here's my list and it turns out 32 is the magic number. I thought I was done moving but lately I've been thinking maybe not so much. Maybe it's time to leave this place and go somewhere else - somewhere with jobs.

1 in Ogunquit, ME
1 in Houston, TX

17!

I feel like I'm missing an apartment or two, though I can't imagine where. I like this place best.

We moved a lot as a kid but it was mostly in the same area.

San Diego to New Jersey, four different places in New Jersey, and then I've only had two places in New York so....7, so far.

Do dorms count?
North Hollywood
4 dorm rooms in Bradford MA
Apt in NH
Dorm in Bridgeport CT
Dorm in London
3 Dorm rooms in Boston
2 Apts in Boston
Apt in Iowa City
Apt in Denver
Apt in NH
Apt in NYC
Condo in NYC

Heh, funny that I responded in your thread, Dan, but still made a double!

(I don't remember where in Eugene it was: I was three.)
posted by Specklet 07 October | 17:29
Two in Cleveland, Ohio
One in West L.A. as child
One in 'the poor side of' Encino growing up
Three dorm rooms on two campuses
Two 'back with parents' in West L.A. and El Segundo
One in Tulare, CA
One in West L.A. away from parents
One in Torrance
One in Bellflower living in sin with future wife
One in Panorama City
Three in the same rental complex in North Hollywood (all with different street addresses: duplex, small house and shared house)
One in 'the poor side of' Studio City
One in Van Nuys (with Dad)
One just outside San Luis Obispo

total: 20 in 3 Metro Areas; if you count only distinct cities/sub-cities, you can combine everything from Panorama City to Van Nuys plus Encino as "San Fernando Valley"

Most of my moves were work related or future-ex-wife related. At 6 years, my current address is my longest run in the same place since the 10 years in the 'growing up' address... time flies when you're disabled. Not moving unless absolutely necessary; if so, will want to get closer to ocean so more likely a Pismo Beach or Morro Bay address. Otherwise, my next address will be an urn. Am I oversharing?

3 in suburban Chicago
1 in suburban Atlanta
3 different dorm rooms in Cambridge
4 in Cambridge
3 in Venice
2 in Washington DC
4 in San Francisco
2 in San Luis Obispo

So: 22 different abodes in 7 different metro areas.

9 in three cities (Tulsa, Waco, Dallas). +1 to both categories if my six week stint in a dorm in London counts.

23, I'm 48. The longest I lived in any one place was 11 years (age 1-12), the shortest was 2 places about 3 months each. There was a point where I went to 4 different schools in 4 years (11-14), which I highly recommend not putting your kid through, it sucked.

Dover, DE
Norfolk, VA (4 houses)
Millington, TN (2 houses)
Virginia Beach, VA
Williamsburg, VA (3 dorms)
Columbus, OH (2 apartments)
Columbus, GA
Richmond, VA (2 houses)

So 8 cities, 16 houses/apartments/dorms in those 8 cities. As long as I stay in this house for another year (which I have ever intention -- moving sucks), I'll have a new record for the longest amount of time I lived in one place.

Ufez, did you go to Richmond College in London?
posted by brujita 07 October | 18:47

No, it was at the Westminster School. Not that I was a student at Westminster. Best I can figure, my university leased (or had some sort of arrangement) a small part of that campus during late Summers. It was a pseudo-study abroad, given that all of my classmates and professors were from my university back in the States.

That said, it was a great experience for several reasons, not the least of which is throwing a barely 19-year-old kid from a medium sized city in the mid-south smack into the middle of London for a month and a half. It didn't take more than a week or so before I started getting really fucking annoyed by the tourist crowds outside Westminster Abbey and subsequently began photobombing them (before photobombing had a name).

Looking at that Wikipedia article now, I'm humbled and more than a bit embarrassed that I puked and pissed and - at least once - passed out on the same lawn that John Locke and A.A. Milne walked across years and years ago. But then I see Shane MacGowan spent time there too and that makes it so much better, if not more respectable.

1 - Childhood home
2 - Dorm 1
3 - Apt. 1 (undergrad)
4 - Apt 2 (undergrad)
5 - Apt 3 (grad)
6 - Apt 4 - awesome group house (grad) - two different rooms, but counted as one
7 - Apt 5 (this town)
8 - Apt 6 - grown up place with one roomate (this town)
9 - Apt 1 with future husband (this town)
10 - Apt 2 with future husband (this town)
11 - current home with husband (over ten years)

Plus time on the road for work, hotels over the eastern half of the country, I'll count that as one more. Plus time on the road this summer, dealing with my brother's freak illness. One more again. It really is a thing, living out of hotel rooms. Different than residences, but noteworthy.

Thirteen.

Oh, and I'd like to add, we refinanced and have the place the way we want it and should be in a position to sell at retirement age, so I'm another feet first (or retirement place should I be so lucky future resident), except - I am open to moving cities.

When The Husband gets frustrated about life and career and such, we've talked about moving - Chicago came up most - and I expressed total openness, but it's been years since those conversations.

While I would still be willing to move, it seems less likely now, with aging family in the not immediate but nearby vicinity.

Also, forbid sudden loss of husband, there is nothing keeping me here, except at what age to you solidify your network of friends and support, you know?
