A Modern Masterpiece, No Longer Used, Will Soon Disappear at Kennedy Airport. One more piece of modernist architecture gone. This makes me very sad.
I'm not sure how I feel. Interestingly, Pei's design style has set such a standard for airports that this no longer looks like groundbreaking design - it just looks like an airport. However, squinting enough to do a little mental time-warp helps a lot. Sometimes it's hard to recognize the original when it exists in a sea of imitators, but they are actually testifying to its genius.

Still, I agree that Saarinen's is the more breathtaking work on that site. When I clicked on this I felt a little bit of fear that it might be the beautiful wavelike Saarinen bullding, and I'm really relieved it's not. it's that that says "JFK" to me. I really hope they rehab that.

Also, BP, do you know about the Recent Past Preservation Network? Looks like I'm catching their site in the midst of a redesign - but it's pretty cool. The National Trust now has a program on Modernism and the Recent Past too.

I didn't know about the RPPN, Miko, but this looks like something I really want to check out. Thanks for both of those links!

Pittsburgh is losing its 1961 Civic Arena as we speak. Ironically, the construction of the arena in the sixties sparked the original historical preservation movement here because they tore down half of the Hill District neighborhood to do it.

Have you seen the LaGuardia control tower, BP? That is SO 1950s.
