We find a striking concentration of attention on Twitter ---roughly 50% of tweets consumed are generated by just 20K elite users

Personally, I tend to use Twitter as a read-only medium since I'm too shy to push thoughts under my own name out into the general internets.
Twitter finally makes sense to me now that I've figured out it's basically (asynchronous) IRC for people who either don't or can't IRC. Right down to the hashtags/channel names for conversations people want to follow (DMs are like PMs, etc.).

I still prefer IRC, but I kinda get it now.

I use it a lot for professional networking - sharing of blog entries and articles, asking questions, relaying conference tweets. It's pretty great for that.

I feel sorry for any civilian friends that follow me because all I tweet about is museum stuff.

Yeah, I conceptizled Twitter as being a public chat and thus it made a lot more sense.

Metafilter is like that too, something like 10% of the people generate 80% of the content.
