17 September 2011

I need to initiate a dialog. [More:] I am beginning to question my ability to remain independent, and I am having difficulty working out solutions because my higher organization skills are pretty much gone.

Two recent cases: Standing at a crosswalk, the signal changed from red to white. By the time I worked out that I should cross, the signal was flashing. I also often cross streets too slow before the green light in the other direction.

I have been using a chore sheet for things like floors, dishes and prescriptions, but this week I added "take shower" and "brush teeth". This serves not only as a necessary reminder, but also a record as I cannot always remember if I had or not the day before.

Forget cash management. That's a disaster. Also, I stopped driving for good some time ago.

I am stranded in Fresno and I need to leave now that the heat has broken because summers here make me sicker. However, I know no one here but my doctors, who I will see the first week of October. Their help in this is pretty limited anyway.

Does anybody have any experience with this?
I'm so sorry you are having difficulties Ardiril.

The FMAAA.org looks like a good place to start:

The Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging (FMAAA) was established in 1980 through a Joint Powers Agreement between the City of Fresno and Fresno and Madera counties.

Phone: 559-600-4405 or 1-800-510-2020
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Take care of yourself (as much as you can), man.

Keep posting, too. It's how we know you're around.

Oh, Adiril, I don't know what to suggest except to second what Eid said. Have you thought of putting out an AskMe about this? The net there is much wider than in our little bunny patch.

I agree, AskMe could result in more knowledgeable and also localized help than we might be able to provide here. If it seems like too much, I can post on your behalf.

Can they figure out some aid or remedy to the cognitive and memory problems? Are they expected or unusual?
It seems like some sort of case management or assistance should be possible.
I wish I could have a roommate but there is no way you would want to live here.

No info here either but second the AskMe suggestion and want you to know I am thinking of you. I also wonder if temperate though rainy Seattle or Portland might be better places for you.

Echoing Eideteker: take care and keep posting. And the idea to post an AskMe (or to have Miko post on your behalf as she offered) seems like a great idea. A larger audience means more targeted responses.

Oh Adiril that sucks. I am not able to help with anything specifically but here are some thoughts :

Are your meds causing the mental fuzzies and can they be changed? This would be a good avenue to explore. I bet you already have it on your list to discuss with your doctors.

If you need to move what is involved in keeping /getting public assistance in a new location?

Do you have access to a case manager? (Yeah, I know not likely)

This sounds like a lot of hurdles when you're doing crummy. Sigh.

Hugs

Hey, make sure "feed the cat" is on the list, too. ;-)

Seriously, I wish I had some info to offer. Take care of yourself, (((Ardiril))).

Social workers might be able to help. If you're using Kaiser or some other similar hospital system, your doctors might be able to connect you with the help you need through there. Otherwise, it looks like the county has mental health centers, including at least one for older adults:

http://www.co.fresno.ca.us/DepartmentPage.aspx?id=378

Social workers are trained in getting people to the resources they need, which is why I suggest that. At the very least, they may be able to help talk you through the decisions you need to make.

Or, it looks like Fresno has a 211 service (just dial 211 on your phone). The people answering are also trained to help link you up with the agencies or departments that might help.

Hang in there, guy.

Thanks for the links and well wishes. A lot of my problem is stasis because I cannot decide what to do, particularly I cannot see how I can move my personal self and my cat. Prioritization is also problematic.

Heh, "feed the cat". The cat is my best alarm clock. If I don't get the message the first few times, she bites my nipple.

Also, I cancelled my Metafilter account because it became way too big a distraction.
