Grrr. We are antsy to move and found a new place. The old landlord's hinting he's not going to work with us on prorating and so we might have to pay rent on 2 places for one month. I just want to say grrrr about that.
That is annoying. But it can be nice to have access to the old and new places for an overlap during a move. We had some overlap during our move and it made the process feel a lot less stressful knowing we didn't have to squeeze everything into one day.

This is true.

We ended up paying two mortgages for 15 months when we moved the last time so a month doesn't seem all that bad to me. Of course that was just our stupidity, not any external factor.

Ouch. That is indeed worse, but we're not in a great position to lose any money at all as we just don't have that big a cushion. But we'll live.

Can you find someone to take over your old place?

You know, it's likely that we could, but actually I really don't want to recommend it to any of my friends. It has some serious liabilities, which is a main reason why we're leaving.

That's very frustrating. Last time I moved, I got my new place to start the lease mid-month, so I only paid for an overlapping two weeks, but it was still a painful expense to pile on top of all the other expenses that come with moving.

Yeah, we're gonna end up paying for two places for a month at least. Still no closing date for the house we're buying. Arrrggghhhh.

It's amazing how hard and last-minute the issue of housing - one of the most basic requirements of life! - is to work out.

Everyone is moving. We should just have a massive moving thread for all associated joys and ills.

Agreeing a whole lot with ThePinkSuperhero. My last move was hellish. Especially because of the last day packing/cleaning tornado. It may be more costly, but the peace of mind is awesome.

P.S. The last minute part was our little slice of stupid.

YEah, after I got over my anger and started thinking about logistics, I can see how this is better. We might be able to postpone the new place movein until the 15th, and we'd still have 2 weeks of overlap but less overall cost. And trying to coordinate a move in 1 day is hellish and exhausting - I know, it seems like just last week we moved into this place in 1 day. Miserable.

So I am starting to like the idea of making several trips, having time to clean properly before putting things in the new place, etc. Thanks for pointing out the advantages.

It's frustrating to be forced into that position, but once it's happened, you can find all sorts of advantages in the overlap. It does eliminate much of the frenzied aspect of moving, and having time to clean or paint the new apartment at your leisure makes everything more pleasant.

My last couple of moves were done with a few weeks' overlap, and it makes moving feel almost civilized. You may also find that it saves you having to rent a truck or hire cleaners to tackle the old place; if so, factor those savings into your final tally and see if it stings a bit less.
