Yes, this is pretty cool, simple, non-intimidating. Basically like IRC with some added features. You don't need a webcam or even a mic, you can just chat if you want or that's all the equipment you have,
Yes, the hide webcam option (called "mute") is a must for some of us. XD
Never fear, though. G+ doesn't dump you into the chat before it gives you a moment to see yourself and prep. You can always mute your cam before dropping in, if you're modest.
