Tell me about your Chevy Aveo [More:]Or, your friend's Aveo. Or, an Aveo you've worked on.

Daughter and her fiance are planning to pool their cash to purchase a commuter car for the daughter to finish-out school while living back at home.

Pickings have been slim as far as affordable, reliable cars go. They've found a very low-mileage 2005 Aveo that the owner is willing to let-go for about a grand below Blue Book. That alone raises red flags for the wife and me. The car has clean CarFax report, but those only tell you the reported problems.

Consumer Reports puts the Aveo at the top of their "Worst Used Cars" list. Not good. My gut is telling me "walk away." The kids, I think, are simply looking at a clean, low-mile car they can afford, and not at the longer-term. Conflict will ensue, I'm sure.

So, anyone here have any personal experience with these little Koreans-in-Chevy-bowties? Second-hand experience?
When I had to run down to L.A. after my dad's accident, I had to rent a car from Enterprise (closest to my location and 'We pick you up') and went for the cheapest vehicle available, a current-model Aveo. It was a delight... surprisingly roomy, excellent mileage, easy to drive... but that's a post-GM-bailout-made version. Still, my experience was so good, it'd probably tempt me to overlook questions with an older model, but then, I have made some dumb car buying decisions before (a major reason why I had to rent a car to go to L.A.). So take as directed with a grain of salt.

BTW, I also recommend Enterprise. Made everything car-wise easy-peasy for me when I had so much else to deal with, then and when I had to rent a big honking Cargo Van (twice - and the Chevy was better than the Ford)... I had always wondered: they'll pick you up, but will they take you back after? Yes!

Functional, not sporty in any sense. I looked at 2005 models when I bought a new car then and wasn't impressed (although I was looking to upgrade from my Ford Aspire and not simply replace it; ended up with a Hyundai Elantra). It is made by Daewoo. They went bankrupt in 2004 I believe and were bought out by GM. Daewoo quality was spotty in 2005, but the Aveo was not one of the problems (Other Daewoos sold with Suzuki badges were not so good- cars like the Reno and Forenza; stay away from those.) The Aveo struck me as a tiny car, but when I checked interior room it was about the same as the last generation of Ford Escort, which is small but not tiny.

I test-drove an Aveo last year when I was car shopping. It was by far the flimsiest, most uncomfortable, and poorly built car I drove. The engine was weak, slow to respond, and had a loud whine. The interior floorboards and dividers were light and cardboardy. Everything felt loose and sloppily put together, and the seats were uncomfortable.

I'm really thankful that I didn't buy it - I found a used Toyota Yaris instead for the same price, and I absolutely adore it.
