25 June 2011

Staring into the abyss that is summer television. I've been in bed, pretty much since Monday following minor nasal surgery. [More:]In the words of my father-in-law, "After two days the dope they put in you wears off and you feel terrible." I went to Hulu to find something to watch and it was like staring into the heart of darkness.

So are there any great TV series on Netflix or elsewhere that I haven't heard of? Bonus points if they are somewhat family-friendly. Due to the aforementioned lack of energy and inability to breathe through my nose, my standards are pretty low.
I've had quite a bit of down time recently and I'll occasionally head over to SnagFilms to pick a documentary. They have a sorter cloud thingy that helps. Hope you feel better!

True Blood stars back up tomorrow. It's ...the opposite of family friendly.

Archer is hilarious and definitely not for kids. Avatar: The Last Airbender is epic and sweet and suitable for all ages. As far as I know all episodes of both series are on Netflix streaming.

I can't watch True Blood. Some of my best friends growing up were appalachian vampires, and I don't like the way they're satirized and denigrated by the show.

I hadn't heard about Snag films, thank you! I just watched the first episode of this season's Burn Notice. What happened to that show...

The first episodes of the 2010 season have cycled back onto Hulu for 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. 30 Rock is operating from tinier plot fragments than ever, and the results are as successful as they are surreal. Highly recommended. As for P&R, it seems to be an acquired taste. If you liked Adam Scott in Party Down, his character here is similar and seems to play a significant role. If you haven't seen Party Down, watch that.

I love Parks and Rec even more than 30 Rock, perhaps because of the slide into Simpson-esque surreality.

I started catching up on MI-5 (Spooks). That show loves to kill off nice people.

Netflix is streaming Twin Peaks if you care to watch that again.

I've actually never seen Twin Peaks. Excellent.

Well, have fun then. Without a break is definitely the way to watch that show. The time will fly by.

Ardiril speaks the truth. Don't watch "Fire Walk With Me" until after you've seen the series.

Netflix is streaming The Stand as well. It's a pretty good adaptation. If you haven't read the book by now, you might as well just watch the miniseries.

Slowly working my way through the old Columbo episodes on Netflix, in homage to Peter Falk. They are more wonderful than I remember. Of course, I'm still in season 1.

Anything by Graham Linehan. Sadly, Father Ted is no longer on instant streaming, but that's just as well since you'd probably laugh the stitches right out of your nose. The IT Crowd is just a wee hair less funny, but still awesome.

Doc Martin is also streaming -- a BBC kind of "cranky city doc is a fish out of water in quirky rural area" thing.

We've been getting around to watching some classics, such as Lonesome Dove, but dang if it isn't depressing. I wouldn't watch it in one big chunk, but it's definitely engrossing in 90 minute episodes, and the performances are great.

I highly recommend getting HBO for HBO GO. It's everything they've ever had at your command. It's kept me occupied through this drought for months.
