Time for SHOWTUNES! omg, live-accompaniment showtunes karaoke; what do I DOOOOOO?[More:] We're going to a piano bar for basically an open mic night as a fundraiser for this local theater group. Which means there will be ACTUAL THEATER PEOPLE there.

We can do as many songs as we want, but hello I want to be good. But I'm trained operatically/chorally, not as a Broadway belter. We're supposed to bring our own sheet music, but then again we should probably know the song well enough.

I have until June 6, and access to a massive library.

Songs I love:
"Shy" from Once Upon a Mattress
"Simple Joys of Maidenhood" from Camelot (the main song starts at 1:50)
"On the Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady -- the group is doing My Fair Lady this summer, but if I go cross-gender maybe it'll be kosher :)
"Don't Rain On My Parade" from Funny Girl -- I may need a little more breath for this one.
"Summer In Ohio" from The Last Five Years -- the others will probably know the musical backwards and forwards, but I have it on a MIX CD, OKAY?

I also have a male friend who will hopefully come, so maybe we can arrange for a duet...

Any other suggestions? I love a challenge and can sing pretty much any range.
Sounds like a dream!!! I enjoy all your choices. What about stuff from "Gypsy"? So many good numbers in that show- "Some People", "Everything's Coming Up Roses".

As for "The Last 5 Years", you really should get the whole recording! If you like "Summer in Ohio", I'm sure you'd enjoy the whole thing.

For someone with operatic training, "Vanilla Ice Cream" from She Loves Me would be great.

I'm gonna keep popping in here with ideas!

I KNEW you would be in here! Keep 'em coming!

"He Plays the Violin" from 1776 might be nice, if there's a solo version arranged.

What about Vilja from The Merry Widow.

I'm going to a piano bar on Friday - and it's run by a MeChazan - sueinnyc. It's wonderful. I can't sing, so I always do a song that is super easy ("Good Morning Starshine", for example) or which relies on 'performance' rather than vocal. "Happy Talk" is good for this and I'll probably sing that this Friday. I'm waiting for Glee to do "Horse With No Name" so I can sing that, as it's practically a monotone.

We always try to end with "Springtime for Hitler."

Go for the laugh.

"I Cain't Say No" from Oklahoma. Except, when it comes to the main line, just do "I cain't say nnnnnnnnnn!" then ask to go back a few bars. Repeat and then gesture wildly to go on.

"Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" from Shall We Dance. Emphasize that you're sight reading it. Pick one pronunciation for each pair (ie, po-tay-to/po-tay-to instead po-tay-to/po-tah-to). Look confused.

I'm sorry, but this really annoys/angers me, and I need to vent. || The Brady Bunch Variety Hour: Disco Medley
