29 April 2011

Royal Wedding coverage has begun here in Aus... I'm strangely interested now, but wondering how that will hold up over the next seven or so hours.
The coverage in Chicago starts in an hour and change. When is the actual ceremony supposed to start?
posted by youngergirl44 29 April | 01:51
So many talking heads, so little sense or content. I've got it muted in the background while I read and cook. What time (Sydney time) is anything expected to happen?
posted by ninazer0 29 April | 01:52
Bah. Ceremony starts at 11am London time so expect people on the move from 10:30 onwards. It's going on 8am in London now, so nothing for HOURS yet.
posted by ninazer0 29 April | 01:55

Yes, but Nine and 7 are trying their best to make something out of nothing. I'd recommend Nine's coverage ever so slightly more than 7's. I think ABC1 starts up at 6 pm Sydney time or roundabouts.

First news of the morning - William has been styled the Duke of Cambridge by his grandma, meaning Kate will be styled Duchess of Cambridge as of 11:30 or so BST. Better sounding than Princess William of Wales.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 02:05
Yay! I found BBC America! This just in: Kate's dress is "crucial".

I didn't think I cared, but I think I'm too excited to sleep. WTF?
posted by youngergirl44 29 April | 02:11
Got home from work, had cocktails (they make me sleepy) and had a nap until 10:55 p.m. Up then, made tea, and now I am parked in front of the television. I am going to watch it all night.

Yes, I'm silly, and yes, I booked Friday off work.

I love the titles. I want a title. Latest, per the CBC: "All signs point to an Alexander McQueen dress."

An interview with the chef from a pub frequented by the Middletons! Riveting!
posted by youngergirl44 29 April | 02:49
We're getting views of the fascinators and morning suits walking into the Abbey.

Just made a cup of tea. Tried to get scones but they were out at the local supermarket (and the oven is broken).

GOOD MORNING

I only went to sleep, like, 4 hours ago!

Woohoo it took awhile, but we finally found BBC America!

The Beckhams arriving- show us the full length on her dress, come on. Surprised they don't get to come later.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 03:17
She looks angry and his tie is neat. They will most likely be sitting in the nave.
posted by youngergirl44 29 April | 03:23
My Mom keeps saying, she's pregnant? Yup!

Ha! Metachat busy on a European daylight hour!
Great.

Now we know the answer to the age old question: does anyone still wear a hat? I'll drink to THAT!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 03:30
She did look angry, but he looked delicious. What medal was he wearing?

Is BBC America playing the BBC coverage or their own coverage? Our ABC1 coverage finally started and they're straight broadcasting the BBC. Which is a blessing, really. If we can't have a comedy broadcast I'd rather see the 'official' British one.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 03:37
They're streaming coverage from the BBC.

posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 03:42
I'm waiting for ER to finish (the episode with Ewan McGregor) and then I'm going to get showered and go out. I pick up my new car today. That's far more important to me than the Royal Wedding. At least the roads will be quiet for my drive home.
posted by Senyar 29 April | 03:47
At least wear a hat, Senyar!

Sheepish wave. I woke at 4:30, not unusual, for a wee and a water. Strangely I couldn't get back to sleep. Then I realized that it was meant to be - so help me, I am watching.
posted by rainbaby 29 April | 04:14
Looks like a little pizza delivery sign, for the royal car.
posted by rainbaby 29 April | 04:17
That little sign looks almost pitiful, doesn't it?
posted by mosessis 29 April | 04:18
Shame William can't keep his hat on.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 04:19
He's edging dangerously close to a comb over.

I haven't seen our crown prince yet. Too bad.

If any curtains need to be pulled back and hooked to stays, these dudes are READY.
posted by fleacircus 29 April | 04:24
I think Harry's father kept his hair a little longer than William's did, so maybe he'll get lucky.

There's nothing wrong with going bald, it's just much easier to do gracefully if you don't keep long hair.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 04:25
jouke, are you Dutch? I think you guys just came in.

Aww. Bridesmaids.
posted by jouke 29 April | 04:57
Veils are pretty common for full church weddings I think.

Pippa looks incredibly thin in that dress.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 04:57
Love Harry handing off his program!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 05:04
I can't decide if I like the dress or not. The skirt is absolutely beautiful and it definitely flatters her, but something's bothering me about the bodice and lace.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:06
I think the veil could do to be longer.

William's smile looked so genuinely happy when she got to the front.

She looks so nervous!! Poor dear!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 05:15
I can't believe how calm Catherine looks. And the dress is beautiful. I loved how William didn't look until she got to him.
posted by deborah 29 April | 05:16
Yes, while they were saying the vows, she looked more nervous. Probably not wanting to fluff his names.
posted by deborah 29 April | 05:18
You can hear the cheering crowds from outside. That must be so surreal.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:18
I'm singing the hymns along with the congregation!

Wonder how many times he practiced that hat move.
posted by fleacircus 29 April | 05:19
My aunt and uncle got tix to Regis and Kelly today, and it's a wedding spectacular! They were encouraged to dress up, which they did. They're watching now at the studio, she posted a picture, they look so cute.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 05:23
So many atrocious hats! What the hell is Beatrix wearing? And the panda eyes?
posted by ninazer0 29 April | 05:26
Is Beatrix the one with the greeny blue dress with the square collar?
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:27
Yes, mosessis. Love children's choral music. Eugenie is the one with the horrible four hoop hat.
posted by deborah 29 April | 05:29
I kind of liked that dress. It was different than everyone elses, but still fit the occasion and seemed to flatter her. I haven't seen it in full length yet though.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:31
The singing is quite lovely. The hats are hit or miss.
posted by JanetLand 29 April | 05:34

I like that they added trees/greenery to the Abbey; makes it more ..er.. lively.
posted by deborah 29 April | 05:38
The motet is gorgeous. Good choice.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:41
Eugenie's hat is the big fail. I woke up too late to see the processional. I guess I am going to have to wait for the countless replays over the coming days.
Why don't we wear more hats? I want one of those awesome hates.
The children do sing beautifully, don't they?
I need coffee.
The Dress is gorgeous. Kate is beautiful. Harry is the real babe in the family.
Westminster Abbey looks FABULOUS in HD. Maybe the real star of the show.
Okay, I'll quit now.
posted by msali 29 April | 05:41
Awesome *hats*.
I really need some coffee.
And WTF Pippa?! Who wears a plunging neckline to her sister's day wedding?
posted by msali 29 April | 05:46
I should have linked to this earlier: the official program.
posted by deborah 29 April | 05:49
The sister of the bride wearing the same thing, I guess! Poppa could've used some upper body ornamentation, she kinda looks like a fence post.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 05:49
Oh dear, we're getting to the part where I'll start to cry. I try to be cynical, and I'm always such a softy.
posted by JanetLand 29 April | 05:51
Well, that answers that question: the queen does not sing God Save the Queen.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:53
Oh wow, just saw Eugenie's hat. That is ... unfortunate. She's only 21, though, so I suppose still finding her style?
posted by mosessis 29 April | 05:58
More thoughts - Eugenie looks like a ginger Isabella Blow, and how weird must it be for Charles to be attending his son's wedding at the same place he married Wills' mother? And it's NOT the woman attending the woman with him? Camilla must have incredible forbearence.
posted by msali 29 April | 06:04
Not that I would have any idea how to choose or wear a hat. A fairly terrifying prospect, really.

The carriage!!! I love it.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 06:12
Why does she look down when people are saluting?
posted by mosessis 29 April | 06:18
msali - Charles and Diana were married in St. Paul's Cathedral. Diana's funeral was done at Westminster Abbey.
posted by deborah 29 April | 06:20
Harry with the kids in the carriage is so cute!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 06:21
I don't like the way the veil sits there on her head like a pancake.
posted by wens 29 April | 06:22
Why were Charles and Diana married at St. Paul's?
Diana would have been so proud of her first born today.
Such amazing pageantry.
posted by msali 29 April | 06:28
St. Paul's can hold twice as people. C&D had 3000 guests, 1500 for W&C.
posted by deborah 29 April | 06:30
while they are saluting the cenotaph (those who died in the wars) it's customary to look down in respect.
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:31
I think Pippa stole the show! Gorgeous!
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:31
Sarah Duchesse of York had that bow design on her coat of arms and embroidered onto her train so I think her daughter is doing a big-up to her mother with that hat. It's the biggest sign I've seen in a hat to date!
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:33
Thanks for that tidbit, Wilder; I had been wondering about the looking down as well.
posted by deborah 29 April | 06:34
Also Diana's three nieces (Earl Spencer's daughters) looked like triplets, they're gorgeous too!
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:34
no worries deborah, did you notice the Princes saluted en route to the Abbey as they passed the Cenotaph, if you're not in the armed services you look down when passing.
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:37
Thanks, Wilder! A wealth of information. The BBC should have you doing commentary.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 06:38
the two sisters had the same neckline! they were both gorgeous, Kate clearly did a Grace Kelly on the dress.
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:39
and I'm Irish! I'm loving that Wills is wearing the shamrock on his neck & Kate has daffodils, thistles, shamrocks embroidered into her train. The embroidery on the train is significant in Royal weddings and I think Eugenie was very brave to wear that hat
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:41
It makes a lot more sense knowing that there was a symbol in it.
posted by mosessis 29 April | 06:42
I've been on the phone to my Irish family at every significant moment of the ceremony, we're having a Baily's breakfast (essential for irish weddings!)
posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:43
the embroidery is done at the Hampton court needle workshop and they have to wash their hands every 30 minutes and change needles every 2 hours to stay sharp. It's hundreds of hours of work

posted by Wilder 29 April | 06:57
Eugenie's hat looks like something out of The Producers.
posted by brujita 29 April | 06:57
I love Harry. Pippa is beautiful. Kate is stunning. I think the black eyeliner is so harsh for a daytime spring wedding. I think it makes her look older. That sounds catty but I don't mean it to. I think the makeup is heavy-handed, but that is her style.

I love the bodice of her dress but I'm not sure about the skirt. It's pretty. Definitely traditional.

I started watching around 7:20. I only caught them going into Buckingham Palace in the carriage. The kids are so precious. As the couple was exiting the carriage, one of the boys in the wedding party was looking at the couple so admiringly. I so wanted Kate or William to say something to him.

I forgot to tape it last night. My husband is still sleeping and called out and told me he taped it for me. What a prince!

Hmm... "with my body I thee HONOR (not worship)".

It looked like she had hoops under her skirts.
posted by brujita 29 April | 07:08
I agree re: the eyeliner, LoriFLA. Could've been more subtle.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 07:13
I loved the trees, and I thought Kate was just stunning. Lovely pageant. I do think she was a bit too thin given her natural body type. She didn't look sickly - she looked stunning - but she'll probably put some back on (I never thought she was chubby anyway) and I cringe to think about the press. She could have stopped five pounds ago.

David Beckham was wearing the Order of the British Empire medal. He was granted the OBE in 2003 and is required to wear the medal on any royal ceremonial occasion to which he is invited.

It's a whole different ball-game when the Groom has actually served on search & rescue missions, the best man has served in Afghanistan, the bride has a 2:1 degree, it just shows the difference to me of children who are loved: much as I respect the Queen I don't think her children got enough parental affection due to the social mores of the time.

Heh. Now I'm looking at Project Rungay. From their post on Pippa Middleton:

We don't know her, but we definitely want to after hearing she ran afoul of the palace for wanting to install disco balls for the party. And if that wasn't enough to make her an instant gay icon, she got what she wanted. Stared down the queen and shouted "Give me disco balls or give me death!"

Then when I woke up for work (the TV still on), they were at exactly the same stuff I saw last night. Gar. I guess I'll be watching sometime this weekend...

Mmmm....she didn't have to do much more than sing a few hymns during the ceremony. Perhaps she doesn't think too much of the bride.

I do remember seeing her and her sister snapping at each other on the way in to Diana's funeral.

I was not unenthusiastic about the wedding, but I really didn't care if I watched or not. I had hoped the two of them enjoy a long, fulfilling life together as I would wish any young couple. And then, this morning I got the bug. I woke at 5 a.m. PDT and had to see THE DRESS. That was it. I crumbled. I've been gorging on BBC streams and BBC America ever since. I think the whole spectacle was absolutely perfect. And I cried when the Lancaster flew over Buckingham Palace.
