My brother used to live in Washington, DC, on Connecticut Avenue just downhill from the National Zoo entrance. His apartment was on the ground floor, in the corner closest to the zoo -- across the narrow parking lot behind the building was the zoo fence, and behind that, the Tapir enclosure -- and we would often sit in his living room with the windows open of a summer evening, listening to the whoops and calls of various animals. Since he lived so close to the zoo, I had a great place to kill time if I was meeting him after work, so I had quite a few chances to read the informational sign outside the tapir enclosure on my way out. At the top it read "Consider the Tapir," which has remained one of my favorite phrases ever since.
