I need to be primed on primer [More:]I want to paint the main staircase in my house, and then put a carpet runner down. I bought porch and floor paint for this. But I was not told to prime first. The stairs are quite old and have never been painted, though they appear to have been varnished before. Will it be okay if I just paint the steps with the floor paint given that it's only the few inches at each end of the steps that will show and they won't get walked on much at all?
Everything you need to know is in the chart.

If the varnish is very slick, then the paint you are painting over may not adhere very well and may eventually peel/flake off. Primer gives the paint some "tooth" to stick to. Your other option is to sand the soon-to-be-painted surface lightly to rough it up a little. Not sure which option seems like more work, to be honest.

I would sand and then prime. You're going to need to de-dirt-ify the stairs anyway, and sanding will help get residue and dirt off. Probably I'd wash with TSP after that and before priming. This, of course, is if I wanted it to look super good. Nothing in my current house is worth that much work, but yours definitely may be!

I had to buy a primer for the steps. Floor paint technology hasn't developed to the point of them being able to make a priming paint, I was told.

I did sand twice and scrub the steps three times before I began painting, Miko.
