10 April 2011

put me onto Patti Smith so my itunes just switched to this 'Dancing Barefoot' song which I'd never heard and blew my mind[More:]

I kept trying to place her but got mixed up with PJ Harvey and Tori Amos then I realized I've only heard a couple things from her like "Rock and Roll N*****" and a cover of Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box.

Other good songs/albums from her?
Start with Horses. ALWAYS start with Horses.

There are even bigger songs, but this will give you an idea of how it goes.

thanks! checking them out. I just ran 'genius' on Dancing Barefoot and it totally agreed with my layering of her with the other artists mentioned, it picked

Dancing Barefoot, Patti Smith
Rid Of Me, PJ Harvey
Divorce Song, Liz Phair
Rip Her To Shreds, Blondie
Hot Topic, Le Tigre
I Want You, Elvis Costello
Kool Thing, Sonic Youth
God, Tori Amos
Jumpers, Sleater-Kinney
Children of the revolution, T-Rex
Brass In Pocket, The Pretenders

(Not sure about Blondie & Costello though!)

For me, Horses was by far the best. I liked some stuff from her other early albums, but not nearly as much. I had trouble connecting with her later stuff.

Horses is still my favorite, but hearing her recent performances is still inspiring. She's one of the women who make me feel like getting older is OK. Not very eloquent, but the aging thing is a hard thing for me right now.

Patti Smith's first four albums are each a rock classic, and each is required. Look at her producers.

Horses - producer: John Cale
Radio Ethiopia - producer: Jack Douglas
Easter - producer: Jimmy Iovine
Wave - producer: Todd Rundgren

Radio Ethiopia is the least accessible for its chant-and-noise tracks (which I love btw), but it has her two strongest singles. Also get "5-4-3-2-1" and her cover of "My Generation". I don't have much interest in her later albums.

I could rave for pages but Wikipedia summarizes each album well, and you are better off just getting all four albums and listening to them.
