I just got a Roku XDS. I like it a lot already. But I'm looking for some advice regarding Netflix, channels, etc. [More:]

First, I'm super stoked about Al Jazeera English and Pandora, and I did a quick once-over of all the channels. I have the USB drive channel installed, and I see that I need to convert my media to MP4, which is fine. Any other channel recommendations?

The Netflix streaming seems like a no-brainer. Is it worth going for the $2 more/month for the DVDs too?

Anything else I need to know about my Roku Box? Are there hacks? If so, do I need to bother with them?

Also, would this be better on AskMe? I kind of use this place when I'm not sure, or I'm feeling chatty.

Thanks.

All I can offer is the weirdest thing I ever saw on Netflix Streaming was Berlin covering "The Dope Show". Also, learning that Terri Nunn is an actual rocker and not a Blondie wannabe was a pleasant surprise.

So many channels now! I'm very fond of the Pub-D-Hub channel, which shows wonderful really old stuff. If you don't mind commercial breaks (for the same commercial over and over again -- have the mute button ready!), Crackle is good for "newer" old stuff. And I love love love the radio channels RadioTime and ShoutCast.

This database shows you both the public and private channels available (the private channels don't show up in the Channel Store, but you can add them by logging in to your account at roku.com). YouTube is available as a private channel, which can be fun but it's kind of clunky to use.

I have bought a couple of movies plus all 4 seasons of Mad Men through Amazon streaming. I haven't decided yet if I prefer online storage to owning dvds.

I still get one dvd at a time from Netflix because there are lots of things that don't stream yet, but I certainly don't need it because there's not enough to watch already.

I love Netflix streaming but still keep the disk option, partly because (as JanetLand points out) lots of things aren't available through streaming, but also because those that are don't always stay that way. I was just listening to a story on NPR about how Showtime and Starz (I think) are pulling a lot of their programming off Netflix streaming, and that there's general unease in Hollywood and in the studios about Netflix gaining such dominance in the streaming-media market. (BTW, there's a very useful Twitter stream called queuenoodle that sends out alerts about movies that are about to go off Netflix streaming.)

Re: Roku itself, I've got no hacks to suggest, but will just say that in the year and a half I've had my box, it's been rock-solid and I couldn't be happier with it. Enjoy!

Also, holy *cow*, thanks so much for that database link, JanetLand! I had no idea so much stuff was available, and have been gleefully adding channels.

Yeah, thanks, JanetLand! That's quite a database.

Love my roku. Definitely check out the newscaster channel if you're into politics or news. They stream the video podcasts of many of the nightly shows. It gave me my Maddow fix when we didn't have cable. Hulu plus is available for a free trial, but I haven't tried that one yet. Also keep an eye out for Amazon video credit. They usually have something where you get 5 or 10 bucks in your account as a bonus the first time you link your player. They also have 99 cent new release movies each day that they promote through their twitter account. It looks like most of the other perks have been covered, but I'll pop back in if I think of anything else. Have fun!
