Anyone up for a little MP3 Shuffle-a-gogo? You know the drill, MP3 player on shuffle, first 10 songs, no cheating. [More:]

Here's what I got with some real time comments.

1. AMADOU & MARIAM - Nangaraba (Tjé Ni Mousso 2000) Husband and wife duo from Mali with some very funky rhythms and wickedly cool fluid guitar lines. Apparently they're pretty popular in world music circles, but I just stumbled upon them on rerun of Later... with Jools Holland.

2. EFFIGIES - Coarse in Vein (Remains Nonviewable) Bad ass punk from Chicago's Effigies. This is from one of the great 80's punk albums, 1984's For Ever Grounded.

3. MARY WELLS - Oh Little Boy What Did You Do to Me (Mary Wells Ultimate Collection) - I'm always a sucker for a good "shoo bop shoo bop" backing chorus.

4. CLIVE LANGER and the BOXES - First Thing (Splash 1980) I think I bought this because I was a big Madness fan and Clive produced some of the best Madness albums. The record's not that great, but occasionally a little new wave with a hint of ska is perfect for shuffle.

5. GANG of FOUR - You Don't Have to be Mad (Content 2011) The Gang of Four album is quite good, and since seeing them absolutely live earlier this month I've been listening to quite a bit Go4 lately.

6. YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS - Eating Noddemix (Colossal Youth 1980) It's funny that this sounds so casual now, because when I got this in high school 25+ years ago it seemed like one of the weirdest things I owned. It took me many years to realize what a great little record it really is.

7. the SORROWS - Can't Go Back (Teenage Heartbreak 1980) I'm a huge powerpop fan, and this album is one of my favorites. They fall somewhere between the nerves and the Knack. Which for me is a good thing.

8. the RECORDS - Paint Her Face (Shades in Bed 1979) Speaking of power pop, this was the b-side to one of the all-time great power pop anthems, "Starry Eyes". I am an absolute nerd for this stuff.

9. the PERNICE BROTHERS - F*cking and Flowers (Goodbye Killer 2010) All of the Pernice Brothers tend to blur together in my head over the year, but this stands out a bit more thanks to the bigger and slightly sloppy guitar.

10. the HOODOO GURUS - Poison Pen (Mars Needs Guitars 1985) In college the Gurus were gods to me - the absolute perfect blend of garage rock and power pop, with a sense of humor. Seeing them on the Stoneage Romeos tour ranks as one of my alltime favorite concerts.

Wow - nothing I'm even remotely embarrassed about.
1. Elvis Costello - Church Underground
2. Grateful Dead - Mexicali Blues
3. Whiskeytown - Not Home Anymore
4. Billie Holiday - Easy Living
5. The Who - Dr. Jimmy
6. The National - Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks
7. The Sadies - Whispering Circles
8. The Flaming Lips - Ice Drummer
9. Arcade Fire - Modern Man
10. Wilco - Radio Cure

1. Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues (Live at Folsom Prison)
2. Descendents - I Don't Wanna Grow Up
3. Phil Ochs - Days of Decision
4. Lizzie Huffman - Heavy Hearts
5. Rob Coe - All This and More (Dead Boys cover)
6. Blue Scholars - The Inkwell
7. Tim Barry - C.R.F. (Retired)
8. Big Boys - Brickwall
9. The Budos Band - Origin of Man
10. Nick Curran and the Lowlifes - Baby You Crazy

1. Motherfucker=Redeemer (Part One) - Godspeed You! Black Emperor Heh, you can tell I'm shuffling the whole collection and not just songs on my phone. This is an okay song on one of their lesser albums- not bad, but far from their best. Also, I'm not waiting 22 minutes for this whole song to play. *skip*

2. The Same Deep Water As You - The Cure And now one from an album with no bad songs. Fascination Street remains one of my favorite overall albums ever, and unlike some of the The Cure's music, it's very much timeless to me.

3. I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts - X More good music from my college years.

4. Do You Want To Break Up? - Eurythmics A silly song from a pretty decent album.

5. No Future - Aikawa Nanase Japanese teenage pop from, uh, around 2000 I think. Don't judge.

6. Electric Cafe - Kraftwerk My least favorite Kraftwerk album, but they are still one of my most "formative" bands.

7. Pull Up To The Bumper - Grace Jones In keeping with the strong 80s vibe of most of my shuffles. Heh.

8. Little Stars - The Jesus & Mary Chain From an EP they did in the 90s. Not as good as the classics, but better than most of their 1990s output.

9. Gone Forever - Ulrich Schnauss I'm pretty sure I got this from someone here. I know nada about it except that it's cool and very mellow, spacey, electronic music.

10. Sleepwalker - The Kinks From a 1977 bootleg that I KNOW I got from someone here. There just are no bad Kinks songs. Love them so much.

Well, that was a very random random sampling.

2. Guided By Voices - Liar's Tale
3. Styles P - Switch My Style
4. Bob & Fred - I'll Be On My Way
5. James Chance - Contort Yourself
6. Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover 98)
7. The Revelations Featuring Tre Williams - How Do I Tell Him
8. Washboard Sam - Who Pumped the Wind in My Doughnut
9. Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers - Onwunwa
10. Don Carlo Gesualdo (perf. Concerto Italiano, dir. Rinaldo Alessandrini)- Mercč Grido Piangendo

!. Sleepy Sun--Duet with the Northern Sky--wow, I have no idea who this band is or why I have their cd, but I am not into this song at all.

2. Cocorosie--Milk--30 seconds of squalling. Clearly I need to cull itunes.

3. Thurston Moore--Staring Statues--ah, the 90s.

4. Death from above 1979--Black History Month--some remix from the DJ Kicks Annie cd

5. The Dragons--Amplified Emotion--the Dragons are this awesome and crazy 60s band whose album was like lost to the sands of time, or never released, and then it was a few years ago and college radio discovered it. I think they went on to back up the Beach Boys on some of their albums but this album is pretty great.

6. Fruit Bats--Filthy Water--I love the Fruit Bats and have a huge crush on the main singer guy.

7. Nick Heyward--Kite--this is from a mix my friend Kate T made me. It's a great mix and this song is catchy.

8. Paris Combo--Baron de Chaise--I love this song.

9. Radar Bros.--We Got the Beat--Yes, a cover of the classic 80s pop song, from one of the Merge 20th anniversary releases. I put this on one of my mixes that summer b/c it kicked such ass.

10. Contortions--Contort Yourself--I actually like the later James Chance version of this better.

3. Keren Ann - Au Coin du Monde
4. New Order - Every Little Counts
5. Pixies - Wave of Mutilation

10. Mission of Burma - The Enthusiast

I just read the James Chance interview in Totally Wired a few nights ago which reminded how long it's been since I've listened to James Chance or the Contortions and was planning to rip it to the MP3 player soon. Now with two "Contort Yourself" shuffles I think it's the No Wave gods telling me to get to it right now!

1. Noisettes: "Never Fall in Love Again" (What's the Time, Mr. Wolf?) -- I got this album because of the awesome "Scratch Your Name, but haven't really gotten into the rest.

2. Saint-Saens: "Tortoises" (Carnival of the Animals) -- oh, do I adore the whole Carnival of the Animals. Very easy to listen to the whole thing all the way through. Listen to the awesome Finale to hear the tidbits of the other movements.

3. Deborah Voigt: "Dich, teure Halle" (Wagner's Tannhauser) -- love Deborah Voigt, skinny or fat.

4. Antony and the Johnsons feat. Rufus Wainwright: "What Can I Do" -- I love Rufus and I love the Antony stuff with Hercules & Love Affair.

5. Eric Whitacre: "Water Night" (performed by my choir, the Isthmus Vocal Ensemble) -- this is probably one of the most popular contemporary choral pieces of the past decade. Whitacre is pretty cool; he's the one who did the choir put together through YouTube.

6. Chicago Voice Exchange: "Love The One You're With" (Inner Child Proof) -- I can't remember how I got this album. I think they sang at some high school choir concert or something.

7. Arcade Fire: "This Must Be the Place" (Live at TT the Bears, Cambridge) -- nothing much about this one in particular, except that I got all the Arcade Fire I could find.

8. Goldfrapp: "Ooh La La" (Supernature) -- Ooh la la, indeed.

9. Soul Coughing: "Super Bon Bon" (Irreistable Bliss) -- this is one of those albums/songs that my brother picked up when he was living at home after high school and buying every cd that Spence at Strictly Discs told him to get. And I am happy he did so :)

10. Brahms: "6. Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt" (Ein Deutsches Requiem) -- maybe the most underappreciated movement. This is one of the best best best pieces. I've only sung the third movement.

Whooh whooh!

BoringPostcards: I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts - X More good music from my college years.
That is one of my all time favortie albums. I listened to the first two X album just a few hours ago.

BoringPostcards: No Future - Aikawa Nanase Japanese teenage pop from, uh, around 2000 I think. Don't judge.
There is so much bad J-pop out there, but I know there's also some really good stuff. I just don't know how to sift through everything to find the good stuff. I'm always looking for a good recommendation, preferably from someone like you with many of the same musical reference points.

gaspode: I feel like you always have Hoodoo Gurus on your shuffles, Slack-a-gogo. That makes me happy.
I zero out my MP3 player every few months an rebuild the library from scratch to mix it up, but I seem to always end up putting at least two or three Gurus albums on every time. I think I have five at the moment.

Madamina: Arcade Fire: "This Must Be the Place"
I was on the fence on Arcade Fire until I heard them nail this (my favorite Talking Heads song). They won me over and I ended up liking everything they've done.
posted by Slack-a-gogo 14 March | 21:48
Hey Slack-a-gogo, this is a bit dated but it's still among my J-pop favorites, dunno if it's for everybody's tastes. It reminds me of this (which I also really like), but maybe that's a production thing.

These are my favorite threads. I check out a lot of interesting stuff from you guys. Late, but here are mine:

1. Jean Ritchie, "Lord Randall"
I went through a big Jean Ritchie period this fall, and I like this one more than a lot of her traditional songs - sometimes I think she sings the traditional ones too fast, but this is a lovely version of the song.

2. Allison Moorer, "Mockingbird"
It's been rainy and grey and slow today here, and for some reason, this song cuts right through it for me, and it makes no sense, I know.

3. Meryn Cadell, "The Spelling Bee"
Well, hello, College. I haven't heard this in years, and enh.

4. Lena Horne, "From this Moment On"
Wow, this album was a mistake. Not because of Lena, but the tracks are all muddy and seem like they're slightly rushed. I bet she sings the heck out of this on another better produced album. At least I got this one through a grandfathered emusic account, so I didn't pay too too much.

5. Janis Joplin, "Cry Baby"
I went to a hippy-ish alternative high school, where the music in the rooms (because it was in an old house, there weren't really halls) was usually from the 1960s and 70s (in all its various incarnations) and everyone conformed to their non-conformity. Amyway, I can remember this playing vividly for about a month straight down in the art rooms in the basement while someone got over her heartbreak by making and destroying a series of awkward bowls and vases.

6. Pete Seeger, "Shenandoah,"
Seriously: I have purchased music made in the last decade. And not of the rootsy folk variety, to boot.

7. Susan McKeown, Oro Mhile Gra.
I really love this whole album. I pretty much played it nonstop during a recent trip south, and so it invokes a certain type of southern back road that is endemic throughout Virginia and North Carolina - shady gravel roads under a canopy of spreading trees, creeks and tiny mountains snaking alongside...

8. Etta James, Money (That's What I Want).
I just flat out love her. This is nowhere near my favorite of her songs, but it gets me moving right along with it and I am totally on her side.

9. Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson, Blue Ridge Mountain Blues.
See aforementioned Jean Ritchie period.

10. Rosemary Clooney, I'm Confessin' That I Love You.
This is off one of her last albums. Her voice is in pretty good shape considering everything she went through, and I love the way she sings the song. I actually prefer the later Rosie to the early Rosie. Not only can she avoid the novelty songs, but she brings her life experience to the interpretation. Less perfect voice, more Interesting vocals.
