Bailey update [More:]
Following this yesterday, Bailey didn't have a good night. She didn't eat or drink, although I syringed some water into her mouth, but was worried in case the problem is her kidneys and that might make it worse. She peed about half a teaspoon of blood-red pee. She is very lethargic and could barely manage a purr when I gave her her favourite cheek scritch.

I took her to the vets tonight and her blood work is not good. Apparently her red count should be between 35 and 40. Hers is 13. But they can't just give cats a blood transfusion, apparently it doesn't work that way.

Right now she is in hospital overnight so they can give her some fluids and monitor her (she is starting to look jaundiced and she's dehydrated). Her fever is down, her temperature was back to normal today, but until more tests are done they don't know what she's got - leukaemia, infectious anaemia, some kind of autoimmune illness - or something else.

But I have been warned not to be too optimistic about the prognosis, because if it is any of those first three things, the options are very limited.

Bailey is a fighter, and has twice recovered from cancer. Tonight she looked very, very poorly. I'll know more tomorrow, after the tests have been run overnight.

Lucy is wandering round like a lost soul, looking for her mum. They've never been apart overnight before.
I'm so sorry, Senyar. Love to you and Lucy and Bailey.

Oh, so sorry. This is so difficult. I will be thinking of tough little Bailey, and Lucy and you. I've been there and know that it's a hard time to go through, and not everybody understands when it's a pet. But they are our most loyal friends.

The thought of a Twinkie-kiss should be enough to make Bailey leap from her sick bed and run in the opposite direction!

Just catching up on this. Love to all three of you and a big head bonk for Bailey. I've got my knuckle buried in Whitey Ford's ear right now and I've told him his "far away sister" is ill.

The vet just rang. Bailey doesn't have AIDS or leukaemia, but they're still awaiting the lab results on the infectious anaemia (FIA). They are going to force feed her today to try to get her strength up (poor Bailey!), but she has had IV fluids. She is still pale and jaundiced though, which is indicative of FIA. The vet will phone me later today to discuss what the plan is for the weekend.

Sorry to hear this, Senyar. I gave my black-and-white monster an extra chin-scratch this morning. He was very ill last summer (I complained about it here) and spent a week at the vet's, costing 700, but is now fighting fit (and insured).

How old is she?
posted by altolinguistic 14 January | 05:24
Bailey's ten-and-a-half, so not old for a cat really. She's insured, so hopefully the cost, apart from the first 50, is covered.

I hope she gets well soon, big hugs Senyar, rest well all of you.

Go Bailey! I hope she pulls through and can come home soon

Bailey is staying in hospital for more tests to be done. She is making some red cells, though, which is a good sign, but she's also dumping them out of her bloodstream just as quickly as she's generating them. If it is the FIA or some other kind of anaemia, they need to get her to regenerate red cells but not destroy them. If not, then it will not be good news.

She's had some liquid nutrition through a tube and is on IV fluids, and is calm but lethargic.

So, another night for our Bailey away from Lucy and me. Lucy is even letting me cuddle her, she is so lost without her mum.
