So Who Has Read The Magicians? I re-read it on a plane and noticed that aside from Eliot (very pale) and I think Janet (blond ponytail?) you never get any descriptions of the main character's race or coloration or what. I thought that was interesting. →[More:]

I'm kind of working on Illustrations for the book, for fun, and re-reading made me go "uh wait just cause the background is this WASP-Y New Englandly prep School doesn't at all mean everyone is all School-Ties Aryan cause that's never described."

I always assume any character named Janet looks exactly like me.

Isn't there a description of Penny? For some reason I have a vivid idea of what he looks like in my mind.

Penny has a mohawk and the punk regalia is supposed to look kinda ridiculous on him, so in my head he was always a chunky white dork. But alice is just described as "small" and Quentin as "tall, skinny" and Josh as "Kinda round". Secondary characters are given much more visual detail.

You know, like the Scott McCloud thing, main characters are given few detail in some kinds of story so they can be standins for the reader. Coraline, if I recall, has no visual description of Coraline herself, so she could be any little girl.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Northeastern culture, but for a place that's supposed to be un-HP, it sure felt HP-ish.

Other than that, the story was good.

And yeah, wtf was that with Penny.

There is a new book coming out. I only want two things to happen

Penny. You know.

We get resolution re: Josh's sexuality. I can't be the only person who was getting weird vibes whenever the issue of Josh and Sex came up.
