Birds of the World A kind of neat repository for birds throughout the world. What's your favorite bird? Mine at the moment is the Black-Throated Blue Warbler.[More:]

All About Birds is my go-to for the US, but this is still pretty neato.

Negatives: It's not very comprehensive, and it doesn't show in what countries the birds are found. That seems kind of silly to me.
My favourite birds is the pigeon. Yes, the common old rock dove. If I was a bird, I'd be a pigeon - I have short little legs, a big butt, I can't sing, I'm not very elegant, but, like the beautiful iridescent plumage on the throat of a pigeon, put me in the light and I'll shine.

I don't know that i have a favorite bird. I always liked the wood thrush because of its strange call. I like trees full of raucous starlings and when they swarm together in great black clouds. I like gray jays because they are tame enough to come to hand. And crows; i like watching them, but not when they steal from the garden.

Mine at the moment is the Black-Throated Blue Warbler.

Have you read Freedom by Jonathan Franzen? The Blue Warbler is a star.

I love all birds. There is this beautiful medium sized bird that sits on my fence. They sit in pairs and are black and white, or like a bluish/black and white. I don't know what they are but they are gorgeous. They are bigger than the average bird. I love the blue jay and the cardinal and hawks and the water birds that hang out around my house.

So many birds are favourites for different reasons.

- Meadowlarks for their beautiful voice
- Fork-tailed flycatchers for the way their tail feathers seem to spin while flying
- Jays for their beautiful plumage and sense of humour
- Hawks for their fierceness
- Crows and Ravens for their mysteriousness
- Quail for their funny way of running around

Heh, I could go on and on and on...

My all-time favorite bird is the Swainson's Thrush. When I was a kid, they could be heard echoing through the woods in the early mornings in the spring and summer. You don't hear them as much around here anymore, to over-developed. Their song is one of those sounds that gives me a nostalgic, warm fuzzy feeling, like the way your grandma's purse smelled :D

The bald eagle. Not for patriotic reasons, but because nine days ago I threw open an upstairs curtain and found myself staring at a bald eagle perched on the walnut tree in the pasture. This particular tree is enormous, like several hundred years old enormous, and still the eagle looked...well, majestic. Every bit the proud equal of this tree, and lord of all he surveyed. After a few minutes, he spread his wings and whooshed past the house, not to be seen again. My God. It was astounding. I might so easily have missed this sight and am so grateful for having seen it.

Of course, no list of truly awesome birds is complete without this one.
