A year in the life of a foster parentHow does it feel, not knowing which strangers' child will come through your door next? Recommendation: before reading, increase power to the structural integrity field of the heart.
My brother and his wife have had some trouble conceiving - I'm not exactly sure what kind of trouble because we're not the kind of family to go into personal details like that - and decided to try fostering. They specified they would like to foster a child under 1 year old, and the first one they were called about was a sweet little 4month-old boy with a 4year-old brother. They took them both in.
It was very difficult and continues to be so, the older one has abandonment issues and gets very anxious when my brother leaves town for work. But they have been great parents to these two, and after fostering for well over a year (maybe 2?) they just this summer were able to adopt them both. I'm so happy to have two nephews now!
That's so exciting, rhapsodie! I'm interested in possibly fostering/adopting some day, and I've been reading some great blogs lately by families doing just that (1, 2, 3). So great to hear people discuss their struggles, and be able to be there for them if only through words on a screen!
