OMG BUGS BUNNY! 1939: Warner Bros. director Ben "Bugs" Hardaway makes “Hare-um Scare-um” with a rabbit designed by Cartoonist Charlie Thorson who labels his sketch “Bugs’ Bunny”. A year later, when producer Leon Schlesinger uses the label to name the character, new director Tex Avery hates it. “That’s sissy,” he complains. “Mine’s a tall, lanky, mean rabbit. He isn’t a fuzzy little bunny!”
I love animation empheria.

Heh. Having grown up with Bugs, "bunny" just doesn't *have* a "fuzzy little" connotation. "Bunny" means Bugs! "Rabbit" is a fluffy little timid creature. (And I had a bunch of 'em as a kid, too.)

Interesting that the phrase "Of course you know, this means war" came from Groucho Marx. I associate it more with Marvin the Martian than Bugs, although a lot of cartoons used it, I know. Funny what sticks around and what you have to go dig up.

One of the interesting things about growing up on Bugs Bunny is the very gradual realization that almost everything he said or did was a borrowing, a parody, or a mockery of the pop culture of the time. I wish I had a fiver for every time I was watching a vintage movie or listening to an old-time radio show or reading some ancient copy of LIFE magazine, and came across a line or catchprase or trope or plot arc I thought of as a "Bugs Bunny" thing.

I once failed a music test at school because I identified "The Ride of The Valkyries" as "Kill Da Wabbit".
