I found this miserably poignant. I wonder who Dick is? The younger kid immediately said "I thought we were going to Dick's house" and when the mom came around to the older kid, he said something like "We were planning on going to Dick's house..." It makes me wonder about who that is and what he means to the kids. In the comments, the mom chimes in to say that everything worked out, but that "The reason they were upest was because they had planned this trip to "Dicks House" for such a long time." Well, I can understand that. If I'd planned a trip to Paris for a long time, and then my traveling companion switched it up while we were AT the airport and said "We're actually going to HAWAII!" I would have a pretty hard time adjusting and would be PO'd at first. Nothing against Hawaii, I totally want to go there, but not when I was all psyched up for Paris.
It's also a good reinforcement of the wisdom that kids aren't always going to interpret things the same way adults do. Our "wonderful surprise" can be their frightening, random change of plans that makes the world feel utterly unpredictable and confusing.
The littlest girl is just picking up on the zeitgeist.
This is why I don't like surprises. They usually entail lies and rob the surprisee of the opportunity to look forward to the event. I think that's half the fun. I would have reacted just like the kids even if I had wanted to go to Disneyworld.
