Radio! Who remembers MechaRadio? Who wants it back?[More:]
I miss the days of MetaRadio, and in spite of my lack of income I'm tempted to bring it back in some form or another.

Do the powers that be disagree? Would anyone be willing to commit to a regular schedule? I'm just trying to get a feel for things before I commit to a licensing setup.
I miss it, even though I only ever found time to listen on Friday nights. I'm not really sure why it went away, either...

Radio is dead due to lack of interest. Only six people kicked in money and only about six broadcast. About 60 people asked to broadcast but most never did mostly due to the fact they found setting up the software beyond their capabilities. I tried to make the software a portable app so it would need no setup but for some reason the DSP would not work when made portable.

I asked fellow bunnies if anyone had more portable app experience but none do. I talked to some people who said they had a no install app coming but they never did get it done. I also talked with a group about radio funded by advertising but that too is still not done.

I'd love to bring radio back because it seems to breed community but with no funding and software that most people find too hard to set up it seems dead for now.

I am still working to find alternatives. Any suggestions would be welcome.

More here. If you can help solve the problems I'd love to bring it back.

The domain is set to expire in a few days.

Hi, arsey, I was going to link to that same thread ('cause I was the one who brought it up in August). As I said before, I'll do whatever I can, and if re-registering the (or another) domain name and hosting is needed, I have a much underused hosting account and a bleepload of domains registered (including radiosbeloved.com, just sayin') I can provide more in the way of resources and personal work than money (which I'm sure applies to most of us).

The real big problem is still the software. Unless someone can make Winamp + Oddcast portable (no set up) then it will never attract more than a few broadcasters. If we could solve that and pull in about $38 a month then we would be set.

I think the thing that bothers me about Dorset Cereals is this competition.

First prize. One of two traditional, hand-built Gypsy caravans. They’re great for the garden and make brilliant wildlife hides, playhouses for the children, or just somewhere to squirrel away with a cup of tea and a good book...

Second prize. Choose from a hand-built Pashley bicycle, a deluxe bell tent, a charming wooden swing, a luxury freestanding hammock, £500 of lovely Boden stuff, or a pair of handmade Lloyd Loom chairs...

I don't want to be in this demographic!

Perhaps you can avoid the demographic authorities by hiding your response in an unrelated thread, TheophileEscargot.

Well, let's renew the domain, first and foremost. I'm happy to contribute if need be. That buys us some more time, and I hate domain squatters, so anything that foils them is good by me.

Definitely count me in on the money side of things if the software gets sorted.

I'll contribute as well (may need to be reminded). Set us up the bomb.

Maybe someone should post a radio set-up q to Ask Metafilter

found setting up the software beyond their capabilities

I'm very interested in radio and in being a broadcaster. I would say that setting up the software was definitely not beyond my capabilities, but that my computer and internet connection were, combined, not powerful enough to support the stream without irritating buffering hangups. So the problem has something to do with software, but it's not necessarily ineptitude - it's also partially just that the technical specs for supporting this are beyond what I can afford in a computer + connection right now. I would be happy to contribute, but only if we did have another software solution that allowed me to participate.

Thanks for the info, arse_hat - I had missed the earlier thread. Glad to see that interest is still there, I'll look into the software side and see if there's anything I can turn up.

D'oh. Maybe if I had a proper Full English Breakfast my brain would have enough fuel to post in the right thread.

To clarify: I will donate for the domain renewal ASAP if someone gives me the deets on where to send the money. I think there was a general radio paypal addy, but I want to make sure that my money is going to the renewal. No sense sending money that sits somewhere, and then the domain expires.

My e-mail is in my profile.

I've donated once off before, but I'd be happy to make a small regular contribution if that would be easier to keep things up & running.

I know I looked half arsedly into broadcasting.
Do we need Winamp to broadcast, or is there a Mac alternative?

I vaguely remember some Mac users in #bunnies being unable to listen, but I can't remember off the top of my head what my solution to that was.

It'd be great to get this going on, thanks for all your efforts, arse_hat, please let me know if there's anything I can help out with.
