Embarrassingly clueless. Hope me. A friend just gave me her scanner. She told me I'd have to go on the Epson website to download stuff for it so it would work. I downloaded and installed drivers for it, was that what I needed? Now what? [More:]It's not clear to me what I need to do to make this sucker work. The computer located it as new hardware but that went nowhere.
The next step is to get and install the scanning software itself. The drivers tell the computer how to talk to the scanner. The software itself does all the fun scanning bits. You'll also find this on the Epson website.

PS - You'll probably want image editing software, too. Mostly for quick touch-ups like color and contrast. I'm not sure what Epson has to offer, but I think they have something. If you're scanning photos and on a PC, Picassa works well. If you're on a Mac, you should have some version of iPhoto, or you could go grab Picassa, too.

For drawings, etc., on Windows, Paint.net is a great free tool. I use Pixelmator on the Mac side, but that's free. These will work for touching up photos as well.
