What do you eat when you feel the need to eat healthy? [More:] My folks were here for a week and, while it was lovely to spend time with them, I start eating like a Southerner when I'm around them.

They left this morning, and all I want to eat is healthy stuff. I'm out of ideas, though.

What do you eat when you want to eat healthy?
Dark leafy greens, or salad greens with a light dressing.

Salad is obvious, but after indulging too much that's what I crave. Green salads and whole grain salads. And lots of ice water.

SUSHI. Sometimes when we're driving back into town on Sunday night after a long weekend in my partner/fiance's hometown of Cedar Rapids (home of multiple cereal companies and The Place Where Non-Chains and Healthy Foods Go To Die), I head straight for the hippie co-op and grab myself some tuna rolls.

Brown rice with steamed vegetables. (actually I can eat brown rice pretty much anytime. love it.)

Also, salad.

Cherry or grape tomatoes.
Cold seedless grapes.
Fresh homemade guacamole on eggs, with salsa.

Stir fry. (In winter, slow cooker dishes, especially bean based ones.)

Steamed veggies with great herbs sprinkled on top. (In winter, roasted root veggies.)

Fresh fruit.

Small amounts of primo cheese.

Those asian rolls that come wrapped in rice paper and are stuffed with veggies and dipped in a sweet chili sauce to eat.

Crunchy Peace raisin bran for breakfast with lots of berries on top.

I eat a big bowl of fruit salad.

Summer: berries. I love getting fresh berries and freezing them and having a big frozen bowl full as a snack.

Winter: edamame. I'll steam them, butter them, then put salimon on them.

The biggest thing that helps me connect with my inner health nut is green tea with orange blossoms in place of soda. I usually have it unsweet, and that gets me right back into things.

Dark green leafy things, preferably cruciferous. I cook up a huge bowl and just nom my way through. And giant glasses of water with lots of lemon juice.

Fruit salad - pineapple, berries, pears, apples, whatever. Nuts for protein. Eat this for a couple of days and it'll give you a good old clearout and take away that sluggish feeling.

Beansprouts, nuts and seeds and quinoa with fresh herbs and flax, argan or extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed citrus or vinegar. Pomegranate is also a good option. Something like this recipe will combine the two.
