15 August 2010

End of weekend 3-point update [More:]
1. At the theatre last night (seeing The Beauty Queen of Leenane for the second time) I bumped into someone I used to work with. It was great to catch up with her. The play was even better second time round too.

2. I needed some new work trousers today so I went to Harlow where I got just what I wanted in Matalan. Next door in TKMaxx I bought this set of santoku knives for £2.99 and - bargain of bargains - this 10" pre-seasoned cast-iron skillet for £7.99. I have a smaller old cast-iron skillet that I bought in 1976, but it has a wooden handle and so can't go in the oven.

3. In the Water Gardens in Harlow I watched the koi pond for a while, and then came across a young cat, bigger than a kitten, not yet adult, a little tabby/white boy, who was fascinated by something in the bushes (probably a sparrow). He let me make a fuss of him and was very friendly, but I wondered what he was doing in the town centre by himself, so near to such a big car park.
I need new knives, essexjan. I've bought a lot of useless crap lately. I need to break down and buy something useful.

1. School starts tomorrow. My kids have all of their school supplies and a closet full of new clothes and shoes. I bought everything yesterday. The stores were madhouses.

2. My sister just called and asked if I were going to the beach. I'm trying to convince my younger kid (video game addict) to go. We're going. I'll drag him there and he'll like it. He always has a great time once we get there, he just never wants to leave the house. Much like his mother.

3. I watched the movie, Date Night with my husband last night. It was good for a few laughs. I liked looking at the interiors of the houses more than the actual movie.

1. Saw the Scott Pilgrim movie Friday night (with pinky.p) and it rocked!! Scott Pilgrim heals all wounds. I'm seeing it again today with another friend who was in a wedding all weekend and couldn't go earlier.

2. Now I am doing laundry.

3. I'm almost done with the baby blanket for my impending nephew--I'll knit a little more today while watching Veronica Mars and hopefully finish in the next day or two, as I also have to knit a blueberry hat for the wee one. All this tiny knitting makes me want baaaaabies.

1) Friday night's going away party was a fun time, and I drank far too much whiskey for my own good, but I did survive Saturday. Had a really fun night though, so it was one of those good balances, where the pain from the drink was balanced with good memories at least!

2) The girlies began this week early as I accommodated their mom's plans. So, bonus Saturday evening with the girls!

3) Today, pretty much running errands, getting ready for the week. Just ate a fantastic sandwich for lunch, and will make pizza for dinner. Wooooooo!

1. Cats awoke me to take care of the empty food bowl situation.

2. Going to take me friend from Texas down to the beach. Hopefully the marine layer burns off before her plane leaves.

3. Saw Inception last night. Had a weird dream I can't really remember but Ellen Page had a cameo.

1. Saw "The Tempest" at the Old Vic on Saturday night, which was pretty good. Quite possibly passed Senyar as I walked past the Young Vic to get some cough sweets.

2. Uh, that was about it.

3. Yep.

1. Endless sorting and fussing over bit and pieces of the flat as the movers get here tomorrow morning. We're in good shape, though, and not all frantic.

2. Sitting down for a bit, gratefully drinking beer.

3. Making corn and chicken quesadillas tonight, with guacamole and hand-made tortillas and salsa fresca. Last meal in the flat.

1. Downloaded the audiobook of Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know from my local library system to listen to passively at work this week. Kind of just hoping to glean some good information. I keep forgetting about our library's audiobook download program. I should take advantage of it more often.

2. Class starts back up tomorrow. Tackling Chem II and Physics I this semester. Bring it, science.

3. Trying to come up with a sorta plan for lunch. Can't quite figure it out. Thinking is hard on Sundays.

1) Made a pie.
2) Been down in the dumps.
3) Have gained weight (see #1 and #2), and clothes don't fit so well. This is unfortunate.

1. Driving 45min. to the far-away car dealership turned out well, as they fixed my air conditioning for free as a "gesture of goodwill for customer satisfaction," as my receipt says. I think they just like taking business away from the close-by car dealership.

2. Ikkyu2 and I managed to put our new platform bed frame together, and he managed to attach brackets to it that let us keep using our old headboard, so we spent five hours getting that all set up yesterday. The bed is so much more comfortable! No more sagging mattress! Woo!

3. I put cranberry beans in to soak and a Hearst Ranch grass-fed sirloin in to marinate and I've got some farmer's market purple gypsy peppers that I'll roast up with all of the above for dinner. I may also roast up some garlic, because I ended up buying a ton of it at the market yesterday and it smells so good.

1. I dreamed I was taking a semester full of biochemistry classes.

2. I made a huge pot of meatballs: 3 lbs of ground beef, pork and italian sausage.

3. One of my goals this summer has been both to learn to play and the underlying theory of true 50s rockabilly guitar. I overcame a major plateau toward that goal over this last week.

1. Watched my talking heads this morning (that's what Jon calls my Sunday morning news shows). Tennis now. Federer's losing. Heh-heh-heh. (I'm tired of Federer.)

2. I'm making steak and scalloped potatoes (Bette Crocker) and creamed spinach for supper later. Yum.

3. Must do some dishes and put laundry away. Lazy.

1. Was lazy yesterday and played a lot of Lego Batman on the Wii with the BF. Did not go see The Expendables as planned.
2. Being lazy again today. We were supposed to go to the Air & Water Show this afternoon, but I took a nap instead. We did see some of the Blue Angels jets flying over our house - they woke me up from my nap.
3. Should take a shower so I can be quasi prepared if our friends decide they want to go to the movies tonight. We might also have a good steak dinner (complete with sweetbreads for me).
3a. I LOVE SWEETBREADS!

1. I've been done with RM for almost a week and I am getting very bored with this lack of schoolwork. (I really shouldn't bitch because I'm sure that I'll get slammed in the fall with 2 classes.)

2. Working on tidying my house (organizing my filing cabinet, clearing out my closet) and other simple things that seem to get pushed to the wayside when I get busy.

3. Feeling quite like a motherfucking adult and responsible since I made an appointment for a physical and I've been dealing with this psych stuff all by myself and haven't fucked it up yet.

1) I have tried to fix paper work and database work, and not succeded with either. It is a lot of work and my floor is full of papers. I need to find contracts that have gone missing and I am in deep trouble.

2) I took the day with Perle to look at a house, which we both promptly fell in love with. It's out of my pricerange and needs at least two million kronors worth of TLC, but it's 390 meters away from her future school and has the most amazing garden with apple trees, grapes and haselnut-trees... omg please can I win the lottery like tomorrow?

3) We explored playgrounds in the sun until we almost keeled over from tired. The only thing to save us was large gulps of apple and elderberry sugary soda pop called Champis (a rare treat). Right now the cat is falling off my lap he's sleeping so hard. I am attemptig to fix my work.

That is, in fact, an adorable house. And so very, very Swedish. Can I live there, too? It looks like you'd have an extra bedroom...

1. Didn't go to the musical we said we were going to see. Switched tickets to next week to go with other new/old friends from high school. That will be two weekends in a row for theatre with these folks! Good thing they're nice.

2. I actually knit something today! Pity that it wasn't on a pre-existing project :P Happily, I think it's a lot more brainless than the other one, so maybe I'll actually work on it. It's such a lovely color, too (tone-on-tone reds and deep coraly pinks) and VERY soft. Mmmmm, alpaca. OMNOMNOMNOMNOM.

3. Billy Bragg tix FINALLY arrived, a week after I expected them. It'll be a surprise for my partner, so I'm glad they didn't come on a day when he got the mail. Now, to keep up the story about seeing friends in Chicago, especially since the concert isn't actually in Chicago proper. Such subterfuge! Such excitement!
posted by Madamina 15 August | 17:49
Yes you can Madamina! I would indeed have extra bedrooms - to which Perle said "LOTS OF BABY SISTERS", because in theory that could be a 4 bedroom house. :)

1. We are in Virginia Beach visiting family.
2. Yesterday was filled with lots of nephew goodness. He's an adorable cutie-pie who is just learning to talk, and you know, kids say the darndest things!
3. This afternoon was dedicated to visiting with my brother, who was just transferred to the Norfolk Naval Station. I hadn't seen him in a couple of years, so it was great to see him.
3.a Little brothers being what they are, while at lunch, he liked what I had ordered more than what he ordered, so he indiscriminately ate all the yummy stuff right off my plate, and didn't even think twice. Ah, the vagaries of birth order!

Do I still count as a baby sister even if I'm 31 and approximately 5 times her size? Because I'm totally taking you up on it. It'll be very Lotta Leaves Home.

1. The kids are going through a growth spurt and a brain spurt, so they're driving each other and me and their dad INSANE. I finally tossed them off the computer so I could look out my Internet window.

2. The house is a disaster because of 1.

3. Managed to get the school shopping done without much trauma. (School starts a week from tomorrow). I'm leaving it all in the trunk until I've boxed all the clothes that are too small.

OMG what an adorable house!

I did cool stuffs for my Birthday. And melted from the heat.

1. I took it very easy this weekend, and as a result am finally starting to get over whatever virus I've had for the past week. (yay!)

2. I managed to drag myself to the gym this afternoon to lift some weights in an attempt to get back to normal. I finished my usual routine and by the time I got home again, was pretty close to throwing up. I probably should have done a bit less.

3. I am now laying in bed watching a pretty good thunderstorm roll through. One of my cats is leaning against me and watching it too. The other is trying to get my attention by knocking everything on the floor. All in all, a nice way to end the weekend.

I am also in love with this house, dabitch.

1. Depressed on Friday but went out anyway, took pictures of trains.
2. Depressed on Saturday but went out anyway, took pictures of trapeze artists at the park.
3. Okay today, went out anyway, went swimming in the east fork of the Pigeon River and took pictures of rocks and water (which aren't up yet.) It was AWESOME and then my best friend and I went out to my local for a couple of beers and figured out the layout and etc. for the photo show I'm having there in oh god ten days. So it's all kind of rounded out okay.

1. No hot water in my apartment until possibly tonight. I hope it's tonight. *crosses fingers*

2. There was a hip-hop fest on my block, which I guess was good for people who like hip-hop. Not so good for people who want to sit in a quiet house.

3. So, I left. Drove up to Vermont to visit my parents. Perhaps a 3 hr drive was a bit far to go for a shower, but damn, it was worth it. (I took two showers and a bath in the 24 hours that I was there.)

I too covet the house.

1. Have had friend from NZ staying with us since Friday. Very good to see him; it's been 3 or 4 years.
2. Have been doing NYC touristy stuff with said friend, which is always fun. Saturday we did a circle line cruise, which I had only heard about from haters. It was informative, and led to me getting mr. gaspode's wedding anniversary gift. (We are nerds.)
3. Off for a walking tour today, the same one I took my mum on a couple of years ago, of the Financial district. It's very good.

That house is beautiful. That little bed in the alcove would be perfect for Perle!

1-Depressed this weekend and today.
2-Discussed #1 with a friend, who had some good suggestions. I will try to cope.
3-Right now....caffeine.
