Pithy and or Inspirational Sayings and quotes Each employee at the cooperative market where I work is given the chance to update the white board that hangs in our window for a month. Some people pick a single quote and leave it up. Others change the sayings periodically through the month. August is my month, and I am drawing a blank. Can the bunnies hope me please?
One saying attributed to the endlessly quotable Dorothy Parker, showed up in Twitter recently and I plan to use it:

"The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity."

Here's my all time favorite George Eliot quote (from Adam Bede), which I always have pinned to my desk: "Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds."

And by the way, George Eliot said some other really good stuff.

You could have some fun with some Hunter S Thompson quotes. Not all of them are about madness and ether.

My personal favourite, despite my atheistic tendencies, remains:

"Call on god, but row away from the rocks"

I've also long thought that William Burroughs was onto something here:

"Happiness is a byproduct of function, purpose, and conflict; those who seek happiness for itself seek victory without war."

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo Emerson

As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction.

A family favorite: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Thanks everyone. Remember, tt's a cooperative market. More like bearwife's please. None involving deities, because that's not my scene.

Sorry terrapin...didn't mean to throw a deity in there. I never thought of that line as being an advocate of anything in particular, but I completely see your point.

(It's not my scene either)

A coop, eh? So, I take it a little Marxist rhetoric wouldn't be frowned upon, then?

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies."

"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."

"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made."

"There's one way to find out if a man is honest - ask him. If he says, "Yes," you know he is a crook."

"Why should I care about posterity? What's posterity ever done for me?"

"No man goes before his time - unless the boss leaves early."

"Humor is reason gone mad."

"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."

"Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms."

richat: I agree HST isn't exactly religious, just that particular quote. HST in general is fine.

Atom Eyes: Good stuff. Cheers.

A favourite of mine, also.

As is 'trust your neighbours, but build your fences high'.

My all-time favourite is 'people are no damn good', which is not quite as inspirational as you are looking for, I guess ;-)

neither of those quotes reflects life in Vermont in any way, shape or form.

sorry. the "trust your neighbours" part does.

How about this, from the movie "Raising Arizona":

"You're young .. you've got your health. Why would you want a job?"

A few from E.B. White.

"We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry."

"Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder."

"I see nothing in space as promising as the view from a Ferris wheel."

I love the Spanish saying "mejor sola que mal acompañada"

(or for guys ....acompañado)

the idea it's far better to be alone then be in horrible "company" so many people feel lonely and are willing to put up with crap relationships or friendships.
