Ah, thank you pjern! I love the schleptet especially.

I would like to share a couple of my favourites My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth and Iphigenia in Brooklyn.

I now have tears in my eyes from listening to Iphigenia.

I always loved the Blaues Gras Cantata.

His arrangements on Joan Baez' 1966 "Noël" are transcendent. This is how it is meant to sound, no less.

Also, the rest of his ouevre is a garden of delights.

Scared me! My default response is that it was an obit.

I think what I like best about his life's work is the radio show he does, Schickele Mix - "Dedicated to the proposition that all musics are created equal." It's fantastic.

Schickele's P.D.Q. Bach should be on the bookshelf of anyone who likes to have things on their bookshelves that confuse the squares.

It's also very, very funny.

He also wrote the totally serious soundtrack to one of my favorite movies, sci-fi or otherwise, "Silent Running" (complete with Joan Baez vocals that bring a tear in spite of their lyrical failings).

Anyone who doesn't know "New Horizons in Music Appreciation", imagine Beethoven's Fifth 'covered' as a play-by-play sports event. Now listen, and you don't have to imagine it. (When I did my college radio Dr. Demento clone radio show, I played that specific cut as a long bathroom break filler and got a half dozen requests to play it next week)

I love the Schleptet too, but was mildly dismayed to not hear any bursts of laughter from the audience during the performance. Of course, that group did not have the comedic conducting of Schickele, as he does in this clip.

Hey!

pjern, this topic would make a great MeFi post.

I'm pretty sure it's been done.
