Help techie bunnies! think I fried my Blackberry!! Oh Noes....:( So talking with the OH recently, he suggested I get a micro USB cable to replace a broken BlackBerry charger. He explained at the time but it went right over my head why this could be a good idea and is right now unavailible. No, I didn't kill him. Yet. He's in theatre. On Sunday, but that's a whole 'nother story.[More:]

So I bought a micro USB cable which says among many other very tiny writings AWM II a/b 80C 150V FT1 USB 2.0 CABLE.

since I tried to use it to recharge my Blackberry, the Blackberry has died, quietly, uneventfully, no fizzes or splashes or bangs. It just won't turn on again.

So before I lose it, any idea what went wrong? Or what I can do to fix this?
I want to say that I've used the micro USB cable for my camera to charge the BF's work blackberry without any problems. Is it possible that the USB port isn't working so the phone didn't charge and the battery is just dead?

thanks youngergirl44, my heart fair leapt with anticipation and I plugged it in to the regular charger, nothing, zero, zip, even a few minutes on now. It was working fine before I did this and even had good charge.....:(

Wait, how did you try to charge with that usb cable? from a computer port? Did it die just after you plugged it in?

I doubt you damaged it. plugs like this are made to be fool-proof - if you shouldn't plug them they just won't fit. If the plug fits, the device must be able to survive it. USB is a standard (and I think micro USB also) - if a device can't take being plugged into a standard usb port, it can't use that plug format.

What MAY have happened is that for some reason whatever you tried to charge it with didn't give out enough power (like some computer ports). Or it requires something unusual for charging (like power on the data channel) - the device is required to _survive_ being plugged into a standard usb port, but it's not required to charge from the regular power pin.

In any case, I think the battery just got flattened (totally discharged). Smartphone batteries, once flattened, require WAY more power to bring back to life - where just a laptop usb port will be able to trickle-charge a battery from 20% to 100%, you'll need a lot of time with some more robust source (like, in the case of my phone, the OEM charger) to move it up from 0%. I got through a scare like that with an old smartphone once - It went dead after a trip and wouldn't charge from my PC. Searched the internet, saw the recommendation to leave it plugged on to the wall charger overnight, and it came back.

If you have access to an original blackberry charger, try to leave it plugged in overnight.

thanks qvantamon, its now plugged in to a normal Blackberry charger and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The micro USB was linked to the plug from the old damaged charger and plugged into the mains supply. Hoping it resolves before tomorrow as I'm blind without my Blackberry!

So, is the wilderberry ok? The graceberry sends regards.

Yes - a berry update is needed.

Also, I had a dream about this thread last night. Someone had posted after me that you lived in Australia, so the cable I had used in the US was not the same as the one you had in Australia. The poster was very upset that I had the audacity to provide a suggestion without researching your country of origin.

Hey graceberry! the wilderberry is behaving as all complex electronics behave around me......bizzarely.

It wouldn't restart when plugged in to the mains charger, then I took out the battery and put it back in again and hey presto, it started right up. Weird I have no idea why but I am not using that micro USB charger gain!!!

(am giggling at youngergirl's dream!)
